my college list is too short!

I know this is kind of an unusual complaint, but I'm a rising senior and my college list has held steady at four for the past six months or so: Princeton, Georgetown, Dartmouth and UNC in-state. This number seemed fine to me and my parents until my mom heard something on the radio about people getting rejected from more and more schools, and the ideal number being "six to eight."

So she's insisted I add at least two more schools to my list. The only thing is, she doesn't seem to understand that this is illogical unless I'm adding schools that are EASIER to get into than UNC is in-state. I've tried explaining that UNC's admissions process for in-staters is fairly predictable and unless I add a school that she doesn't consider "good enough," I don't really up my chances at acceptance anywhere.

That aside, I still have to find two more schools that I could "see myself at" and have a decent shot of getting into.

I'm looking for a school that's between 4 and 10 thousand undergrads, has a good poli-sci program, and good athletics (not that I would play, but I like to attend).

My stats:
1st in a class of 315
M: 780
CR: 800
W: 750
Four-year varsity athlete and two-year captain
Community service + leadership

I don't want to be too specific because this is, after all, the internet, but I only want kind of a rough idea of some schools that I may have overlooked. I think I'm going to add Vanderbilt to the list, but I don't know how hard it is to get in.

Thanks everyone!

you WILL get into UNC haha so don't worry about it -- if you want to appease your mom, pick a couple of schools (you'll probably get into them no matter what anyway) and let her pay for the apps...

If you're applying to UNC and you're a big athlete/sports fan you'll probably laugh at me for the suggestion, but Duke seems like it should be right up your alley. Great athletics, strong academic institution, and awesome PolySci program. Only downside is you'll have to root for that ******bag Greg Paulus.

And its not easier than UNC^^^^^

With those stats, UNC in-state is your safety. If Mom wants more apps, look to add more reach and match schools. Vandy's a good school but not particularly known for poli sci. Check out Harvard, Yale, Berkeley, Michigan, Stanford, Chicago, Columbia, and (gasp!) Duke. All have very strong poli sci departments.

Come to duke. You'll get in, and let's face it- no one wants to be a tar-hole.

Thanks everyone! I don't think I could quite bring myself to apply to Duke =P but all input is greatly appreciated!

Claremont McKenna in CA. Poli Sci is big at Claremont McKenna. It's definitely the opposite of your schools in it being a Liberal Arts College and being in So Cal, Cali, but it's extremely well known for its Political Science/Government Program.

It's a smaller school, but within the Claremont Consortium you have thousands more students right next to you, yet still under 10K Undergrads. Aside from that they're intramurals are big with school spirit. They actually have a physical ed requirement of 3 semester, or 2 semesters of a team sport.

With your stats, i feel like it would be a match, and they're known for being one school that offers a lot of financial aid, they've also developed the NO LOAN policy for undergrad students, starting this fall.

If you like Princeton, Dartmouth, UNC, and Gtown I think you might also like Stanford, Northwestern, Vanderbilt and maybe even Brown. UNC is amazing, and you are in 100%. I would view it as a safety, and a great one at that. I'm betting you'll probably get merit aid or a Morehead from UNC.

Therefore I would actually add more reaches, schools that are stronger than UNC. Stanford seems like a great fit if you're willing to travel, Northwestern should be a match for you and it might be worth applying. Vandy is a low match/ safety for you. Its very competitive, but your stats are incredibly impressive. I just can't see them rejecting you.

Thanks so much! I'm definitely going to look into Claremont McKenna and slipper's suggestions.

I'd encourage you to also look at East Carolina University and UNC-Ashville.

Additionally...
Wofford College, SC
Washington University, MO
Davidson College, NC
Northwestern University, IL
Allegheny College, PA
U of South Carolina-Columbia
U of Mississippi
College of Charleston

Northwestern. :)

Davidson is fantastic, and it's in NC! Your stats look plenty good enough to get in, but it's a small LAC, so it depends on how you feel about that...

I think I'm going for something a little bigger than Davidson and Wofford... Everyone I know that goes to a LAC really likes it but it's not really for me. I really want a medium sized school, but I'd rather err on the side of too big than too small. That's why UNC is still so high on my list. I think I read somewhere that it's the number one "big school that feels like a small school."

Ha, I love how numbers-obsessed the college process has become...

Can anyone tell me what the social scene is like at Northwestern, Claremont McKenna and WashU?

Have you been nominated for the Morehead yet?

No, but I hope to apply!

I'm also thinking of applying to Cornell, does anyone know if that's good for polisci?

Make sure either yourself or someone from your school nominates you for it.
