My college list/need another match school

Hey guys, I have posted before (under interelations09) but I have been unable to login under that so I am now posting under this name. I just wanted to know what you guys thought about my college list, and whether or not you guys had any ideas about another match school for me. Here are my new statistics after Junior year and after having taken the SAT once more (for the final time).

GPA: 3.65 UW 4.0 + weighted (I have had a 3.9 UW since sophomore year though, possible extenuating circumstances for freshman).

Class Rank: Top 13% (Top 10% by RD)

SAT: 2170 (760 CR 710 M 700 W)

EC's: Very good (Founded Model UN and founded, produced, wrote and directed for the Middle School Drama Club) have obtained leadership status in 3 more (Assistant Editor and Editor for Newspaper, Co-capitan and capitan of Quiz Bowl Team, Assistant Director for Elementary School Play), and am incredibly involved in 4 more (German Tutoring, High School Plays and Musicals, Mixed Ensemble, County Chorus), with more involvement in a few different clubs.

I am also a tutor for the harrisburg area community college in Writing, and I work part time in a multi lingual pizzaria. Am planning to campaign and volunteer for Obama during the summer and fall.

If this matters (I doubt it will), I started a lawn mowing and babysitting businesses over the summer.

Awards: Mostly school level normal stuff, but maybe a bit above average with a focus in language awards. Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Ambassador and Associate Facilitator top the list for out of school awards.

Essays: Looking good so far.

**Reccomendations: **1 excellent (english) 1 very good (spanish)

Other info: I am tri lingual (english spanish and german) and am teaching myself hebrew. Also, I have traveled a lot and have lived in Italy for 3 summers straight.

Intended Major: International Relations

REACH SCHOOLS

Georgetown University (SFS EA)
Johns Hopkins University (RD)

MATCH SCHOOLS

George Washington University (ELLIOT RD)
New York University (CAS RD)

MATCH to SAFETY SCHOOL

American University (SIS RD)

SAFETY SCHOOL

University of Pittsburgh (Rolling Admissions applying in September)

Ok. First of all, does everyone agree with how I ranked my schools, and also, can anyone suggest another match school? Thanks so much for all your help, I hope you guys take a look!

Any thoughts? Just looking for a match school which is awesome for international relations…

Great reaches.

Tufts is a match school known for Fletcher, internationalism, and its study abroad program.

I looked at Tufts long and hard, but eventually came to the conclusion that it was a bit too much of a reach, and I am only allowed to apply to 7 schools (household rule). Do you think it would be a good idea to apply there instead of another match school?

^ I would think more of a reach IMO because of IR09’s lower GPA.

That’s what I was thinking atrophicwhisperer. How do you guys think my list looks like right now though? Any really solid match school’s out there I haven’t looked at?

I think you have a good array. You would not be aggressive to put Tufts in there since you have a strong safety in Pitt. I also think you have a very good shot at GW and American, and a decent shot at NYU. Some match/safeties would be Syracuse, Fordham, Macalester, BU, Northeastern. Smith and Barnard are possibilities as well. UPenn a reach, but you can afford to get reachy

Although you are not top ten percent that doesn’t negate you from considering Tufts as a match. Your SAT score is well within their matriculation range. Personally, I applied to Tufts and had a great interview with a Tufts alumnus (the best interview in fact) and I had 2170, 4.0 GPA… I was rejected while 2-3 HS friends who weren’t even in the top ten % and of clear lesser GPA and SAT than me got in with no cinche. Still mad. :-(

@cptofthehouse thanks. I’ll look into the schools you mentioned, although I’m not crazy about lacs (although I like the feel of tufts for some reason). I think that among GW AU and NYU i’ll get into at least one or two, and then I’ll definitely get into UPITT. Do you think thats accurate? I don’t like UPENN though, as much as it is a prestigious institution.

@Phead thanks again. You make a strong case and I may end up applying to Tufts and one other school and just forking up the 70 bucks myself (my family will pay for 7 schools for me to apply to). Oh, and why did you say great reaches?

Anyone else have any other ideas about good IR schools that aren’t really, really competitive?

Hopkins and Georgetown are two very big names in IR. If you do get into the 5 year BA/MA SFS program at Georgetown, you are very lucky. If you get into Hopkin’s 5 year BA/MA SAIS program, you are also very very very lucky. Hopkins SAIS among Columbia’s SIPA and Tuft’s Fletcher are considered the powerhouses of graduate international relation.

Alright cool. I’ve done a lot of research on those schools leading up to this moment, and for me I feel like I would rather get into GT SFS than Harvard, Princeton, or Yale. And let the shunning from the CC comunity begin because of that comment.

Any other ideas? Comments?

BUMP! for some more ideas

Northeastern! Great urban school.
