My College List

For some reason I am not thrilled with my college list. I'm not sure if it's the fact that I don't have a clear #1 school or that I have too many schools in my home state or around my area.

Definitely Applying List: (no specific order)

Johns Hopkins -- Possibly ED -- visited
Penn -- Possibly ED -- visited
Cornell
Villanova -- Early Action -- visited
Drexel (Honors) -- visited
Lehigh -- visited
Carnegie Mellon -- will be visiting this week
Penn State (Honors... probably not) -- visited
University of Pittsburgh (Honors) -- will be visiting this week

Still under consideration:

UVA
Notre Dame
Georgetown
University of Illinois UC
Boston University

I will be majoring in some sort of engineering field. If you didn't notice, 7 of 9 schools on my definite list are in-state schools (PA) and the other schools I'm considering are all out of state. I'm definitely not expecting to get into all of those schools, but I really like them all.

Basically, I'm looking for suggestions and advice. If anyone can suggest some competitive or any schools that are good for engineering, have an honors college, merit aid, or that you think would be a good fit fore me that would be cool. let me know what you think.

not exactly a suggestion, but a question: why are you considering UVA but not VA Tech?

I actually was considering Virginia Tech early on, but I just lost interest in the school after finding some other schools on my list. I'm considering UVA because it seems like a great fit for me after some research (good public school, reasonable costs, selective OOS, nice campus, nice state, good academics). Although it may not be up to par with Va Tech in terms of engineering, I'm willing to sacrifice that for a better college experience and fit.

^Good reasons, but you may want to put VT back on just to be more secure.

Here's a quick list just off the top of my head:
Purdue
Rose-Hulman
Stevens Tech
GA Tech
U. Michigan

thanks. i'll definitely take a look at those schools.

Check out Purdue and U of maryland's engineering programs if you have a chance.

seems like Purdue is solid choice. I was considering UM early on too, but again, I just lost interest after a while.

I'm a JHU BME '12, if you have questions about JHU, I can hook you up!! ED def. helps in admission, I'll tell you that.

yeah I'm really considering applying ED to JHU BME because even if I'm not accepted BME, but to JHU the ED contract is broken so then I can still look at other schools and consider costs. But if I am accepted BME i would go in a heart beat. I think it would be worth 50k a year. i'll send you a PM.

As a BME, you won't make a ton... undergrad isn't worth 200K, but you'll probably get at least some finaid.

LSU has an honors college and has engineering. Easy $40 app, honors has no extra app, and the app gets you full consideration for all scholarships which range from waiving out-of-state fee (Tution's about $4k/yr) to full ride and cash stipends.
GA Tech has great engineering.

Look into possibly:
harvey mudd?
caltech?
rice?

LSU and Auburn will both give you at least tuition. Doesn't get any better than either if you're a sports fan. Both have solid engineering programs and honors colleges.

The University of Florida has an excellent engineering program as well, and offers a great honors college and merit aid. It's pretty far away from Pennsylvania though...i don't know how u feel about distance

After several college visits I've learned that biomedical engineering is a rather new field (about 20 years old). That's why there aren't many job opportunities yet. The field is growing and work required is becoming ever-more important. Hell, if you can get into JHU BME and do well I think you're probably a special person will probably do well in the future whether that be in graduate school, med school, a job etc. However, I do agree that any degree is not worth 200k... unless you have the $. Also, I probably won't qualify for financial aid and at the same time 50k/year would be extremely expensive for my parents.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
