My College Search

Hi, My name is Jasdeep and I am from Raleigh, North Carolina.

I am looking for a college that has a good engineering reputation and program but also a college that I can explore. I am not totally sure I want to do engineering and I want to be able to "search" for what I want to do or am truly good at.

These are my stats, if they are helpful at all:

SAT: 2150 (660 CR, 720 M, 770 W)
SAT II (retaking): Math IIC 740, US History 700
Class Rank: 9/420

This would be in the "reach" category, but Swarthmore has an engineering program in the context of a liberal arts college. It's an ABET accredited department. You get a B.S. degree with a major in Engineering. You also take the normal assortment of courses from all of the other departments.

It's a bit different from a standard Engineering program in that you don't get a specialized degree in EE, or ChemE, or whatever. You take courses in all of the engineering fields and then concentrate in your prefered area. I'm pretty sure that Dartmouth's (and maybe Yale's) undergrad engineering program is similar

Generally, you would then go on to get a Masters in a specific field of engineering.

You don't have to declare a major until sophmore year, so you would have ample opportunity to sample other departments and change directions if you decide engineering is not your thing.

It's a difficult school to get into, but they are looking for more engineering candidates, they have a very large Asian-American population (I'm assuming you're Indian?), and it's a little easier to get into for males than females.

Given your comment about not being sure, I think this kind of program would be worth looking into, even though the more typical route is to go into a pure engineering program (like Ga Tech) and get a specialized undergrad engineering degree.

Here's a link:

http://www.engin.swarthmore.edu/

It might give you an idea if this sort of program makes sense, then you could look for other schools that offer something similar.

Besides Swat-- there are some other LACs with 3/2 engineering agreements with other schools. You take 3 years at the lAC and then go two years to the other school (like mIT, Cal Tech, etc) to finish the engineering degree. Maybe google "3/2 engineering"

Thanks a lot for the replies. For anyone that has attended LAC's: Is it worth it? Would it be better to go straight to an engineering discipline? Or was it a rewarding experience for the 3-4 years you spent there? Thanks again, more suggestions would be awesome.
