My counselor at school doesnt know me that well. this is her first year, and my principal doesnt know me either. I’m afraid the school report that gets sent to colleges wont be anything great…just a transcript and class rank. how will she be able to write a personal statement about me if she doenst know me? any suggestions?

Make an appointment to sit down and talk with her. How else do you expect her to learn about you?

The counselors at my home school asked us to give them resumes so that they could be able to give us more personal recommendations. Maybe that will work for you.

that is an idea, i'll try that. i gave her a list of my ec's at crap like that, maybe that'll help toooooooo. okie dokie. thanks.

yeah my counselor asked for a list and description of ECs and stuff and some anecdotal stuff they can use

I think it would be a really good idea to sit down and talk with her. That will show that you really have an interest in you both getting to know each other, and it will only help!

Making an appointment to get to know her is about the only thing you can do at this moment, short of baking brownies for her. You're a senior, right?

Yeah, I'm a senior. She has already sent two common app forms out...I was just wondering. As far as I know, she likes me, and can tell by my grades that I'm a good student. I guess i'm just nervous about getting accepted.

Well, your counselor is working on your behalf. Her job is to support you. I wouldn't be too worried. Applying to colleges is a stressful, stressful process.

You will likely (although check to be sure) be able to use any administrator at your school. When I emailed to see if I could use a school college counselor instead of my assigned counselor, the college emailed back saying that it was best that I use whoever could give them the best picture of me, and that any administrator or counselor would work.

The counselors at our high school ask each person asking for a reference to attach a resume and to fill out a questionnaire (What accomplishment makes you most proud, what do you want to do at college, what 3 words would you use to describe yourself, etc.). They also will ask 4 of your teachers what they think of you. With this material (and personal knowledge of you, if any), they write a letter. You should be talking to your counselor to see what she would like to see from you.

Wow,

At my daughter's h.s they are required to do an internship in Jr. year. Once a month they must meet to debreif about their experience. All of this is coordinated by the college counselor. Every junior and parent must make an appoinment to meet with the counselor before the end of their junior year. In addition senior year, they have Senior institute/Senior thesis class that meets 3 periods a week and is taught by the College counselor. By the time it comes to writing the recommendations, she knows all of the seniors from a counselor and teacher perspective

There are some featured discussions at the top of the page when you first get on this forum. Look under the topic "How to Get Great Teacher's Recommendations". There are some very good ideas that you may borrow. They are for teacher's recs... but should be applicable to you as your counselor is new.
