My cousin keeps bugging me. Will he get into med school?

So my cousin is home for the holiday and he's applying to medical school. He's so worried about getting in. I know that he's applied to a lot of places. I think that he has received two interviews. Both places rejected him. He's worried because he doesnt think he's qualified enough. Really, I think that he messed his interviews up with nervousness or something.
I've heard that it is easier to get in for black males, is this true? He is one. He got a 28 on the MCAT 10-bio, 7- Phys, 9-Verbal and his GPA is a 3.4. Science gpa is a 3.4 too. He is a history major and he currently attends Emory in Atlanta. He has a lot of hospital hours but very few research things because he wasnt interested in that. He's been shadowing my pediatrician for 6 years now but he has also worked with 8 other different doctors to see what he likes the best. I keep telling him he has a good chance but I'm not entirely certain either. Does he?

MCAT and GPA are on the low end for accepted applicants. The fact that he's a black male will help a bit, but I don't think it'll have the effect of significantly "boosting" his stats. If his interview skills are weak, that's also a point against him.

Given that he's had two interviews by mid-December ending in two rejections, he might be unsuccessful this round of applications.

I think he's statistically in *very *good shape -- but there's a lot of other things that can go wrong. He might not have applied broadly, he might indeed be a poor interviewer, a poor essay writer, etc. There's a lot of possible mistakes. Two int's by Dec, both rejections -- Shades is right. That's not a good sign.

I disagree with SC. I think the fact he is a black male will help A LOT. On the totem pole of URM's, blacks are above hispanics and African American males are most prized of all. With a 3.4/28, he should be in good shape for a mid-tier med school so I'm not sure why he's not getting acceptances. The med school admissions process is subjective for everyone but URM's. There are so few high scorers that with good stats and no red flags, they should get in. He must be REALLY deficient in some category.

I'd like to point out that I think the ability to add is a must in medical school admissions. Sorry to be harsh.

10 + 7 + 9 = 26

But according to this table of matriculants... numbers looks alright none the less. AAMC: FACTS Table 19: MCAT Scores and GPAs for Applicants and Matriculants to U.S. Medical Schools by Race and Ethnicity

Wow, I completely missed that. Nice work, Z.

whoa, me too lol. I know it's a 28 though. I know he did really good in bio though. He's gone right now so I'll guess that it is 11+8+9

you guys are right. I have no clue as to why he's not getting anything. Something must be wrong somewhere. Well hopefully I'll make the cut. I just got into RICE!!!

Also, nice work on the edit. That's an important link to show him.
