my D wants to maybe Double Major: Dance and undecided

Hello all,

I know I posted on here yesterday about my daughter wanting to go to a school that has dance as an extra curricular activity but now she wants to try and double major dance and (undecided). Of the following list which ones are strong dance majors, with performances available to her, and where she can major in another area. Emerson college, BU, Syracuse, Fordham, UNC, Elon, Ohio State U., University of Cincinnati, USC, FSU, Temple, Drexel. If there are any other colleges comparable to these that are worth looking at please advise me.

I believe the difference between BFA, is a BA in Dance offers more class work than studio performance. Is this correct? What would a Dance minor do? I saw that most of these schools above don't offer dance practice and performance to minors.

She has been in her dance company for 4 years going on 5 but dancing since she was in kindergarten. She does Modern, tap, jazz, Ballet.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
jane

Generally speaking, the BFA makes it more difficult to double major. It’s doable in some schools but can be very difficult because of the time commitment for dance class + rehearsals late into the night. But it can be done. The schools’ websites should tell you if double majoring is permitted. I know it is at Muhlenberg (where I believe most of the dance majors are double majors), Goucher (possibly also true), Temple. I believe it would be nearly impossible at Fordham (Ailey). Visited Purchase dance last winter and was told there were occasional doubles but it was not common, not easy, and not encouraged. Don’t know much about the others, sorry.

To answer your question about the BA vs BFA, that’s correct, the significant difference would be time spent in dance and also, in many if not all cases, BAs don’t get to audition for performances (fewer performance opps).

It appears that you can double major at Connecticut College.
