My dad is going to start working at JH in August. He'll be director of S.T.E.M. initiatives. (Science Technology Education Mathematics) Basically his job trying to make the curriculum better in the math and sciences area. He found an apartment near the university and just signed the lease. This is so exciting.

If my dad works at JH for more than 2 years, part of the pension plan says they'll fund half of my college tuition to any college. Pretty sweet considering I'm going to be a junior in high school this August.

will that help your chances of getting into JHU??

yeah it probably does

hell no. It'll just help pay my tuition for college, but I'll also be able to see JH "behind the scenes". I don't want to go to JH anyway, they don't specialize in business and economics and they are more for people who want to become doctors, scientists, and engineers.

if anything I think it would hurt my chances for admission to JHU

Hopkins has a great Econ/Entrepreneurship & Management program actually...

for undergrads? really?

"they are more for people who want to become doctors, scientists, and engineers."

False. You should look into Hopkins' history, writing sems, international relations, art history, english and econ departments. I'm sure the professors and students would surely disagree.

EDIT: and French.

I heard they were going to be adding some kind of new string of undergrad finance courses to the Econ department offerings, too. They mentioned this at the accepted students session. I don't recall the exact details -- they had not been finalized yet as of last April. Anybody know any info on this??

Lol, anyone else think coolguy sounded a bit like Dwight Schrute?

Just a couple of comments to add re: this thread...

--Having your father working at Johns Hopkins will not impact your chances for admissions either posititively or negatively.

--"they don't specialize in business and economics" ... actually Hopkins has a fantastic Economics Department, and a tremendous Entrepreneurship and Management program, and we opened the Carey School of Business in January 2007.

--"they are more for people who want to become doctors, scientists, and engineers" ... I am hoping that with your father working at Hopkins you learn there is a lot more to Hopkins then just science and tech programs. Our Humanities and Social Sciences programs are highly ranked as well and about 45% of the undergraduates at Hopkins pursue majors outside of Natural Sciences and Engineering.

fusiondogg...you'd be suprised...I'm almost as neurotic.

If 45% pursue non-science/technology, that means 55% do. Which I happen to like.

Thanks for clearing that up. I feel like such an jerk. :( I requested a brochure for Carey Business School and I recieved it today. It looks like a pretty good and well organized program. I think it has potential to be highly ranked. (not that that really matters) ;)
