My dad hates me for doing business

He says I "have" to be an engineer or else he won't pay for my tuition. I wanted to double major in accounting/finance and get an MBA afterwards. How can I prove that this idea is better than engineering?

Same problem here...I'm being forced to study chemistry. Good luck...

Wow I guess this is commen then lol.. he just wants me to do "some type" of engineering, as long as it's engineering. When in truth I know for fact my idea is better..

Truly...go into accounting, there's lots of money to be made if you're willing to work hard.

Just major in engineering and get a high GPA. You can get into business. My dad just hired a Cornell Undergrad who majored in Engineering and had a 3.6 to his private equity firm. It's all about how you present yourself.

Um...get the latest issue U.S. News about the top business schools. They list the typical salary each MBA grad gets.

Let your dad drool over the SIX figures.

oh, the indian parents always pushing for engineering and medical fields, got to love them. engineering is not a bad idea, if you can handle it. my parents too tried to push me into engineering, but I knew it wasn't going to happen. don't pick a field based on what your parents, pick where you feel you will be able to make a living and prosper. many people get into engineering are not able to handle the work load, not to say that undergrad b-schools won't be hard they will be very hard depending on where you go (top 5). pick based on fit. they both offer great job prospects, if you do well.

Heh. Well I am going to deduce that the OPs parents are from the subcontinent. If so, welcome to the outcasts (aka brown people not wanting to be doctors or engineers).

Look if he wants you to be an "engineer" tell him you will go study mathematics+finance and then apply to a PhD financial engineering program. You get the best of both worlds!

OP: Tell your dad to go ***** himself because nothing he does will change your mind. (Right?)

That's what I told my (asian) mom....

mom: "I want you to be a doctor."
me:"Well I don't want to."
mom: "Why?"
me: "I despise science."
mom: "Have fun picking trash in the ghetto."
me: "Whatever. Screw you. Have fun watching me hate my life."

couple days later:
mom: "What are the top 5 business schools?"
me: "Wharton, MIT, Berkeley, UMich, Stern."
mom: "You should apply to UMich and Stern. I hope you get into Stern. If not, then you can go to UMich. ;)"
(Yes!!!!:D )

So she's praying that I'll pull it together and get into NYU Stern, but I want to go to UMich or Stern.

Have your dad go to this website
http://daveformba.blogspot.com/

It shows a very recent article from the "India Daily" on how ISB (the Indian Business School) has its top MBA graduate being paid over $233,000 (Rs 1.04 crore) by an Indian company. It says most of its graduates are making number in the $120K range from Indian or American companies.

Then show him how the typical engineering graduate is making about $50-60K and how the typical medical student graduates after 8 years about $100K in debt.

my mom said if i do business i haftoo do insurance cause its less risky than other forms of business.

ihateCA: i wish my mom was more like yours.

my dad likes the idea of going into business and making big bucks. my mom thinks business will take you no where. sigh she wants me to go into premed. nevertheless, i'm going to b-school and earn an mba regardless of what my mom wants.

but then again, i'm afraid to tell her...
oh dear, the wrath of asian mothers.

oh well. shrug it off. A few years after graduating you'll be making big bucks and she'll see you made the right decision.

Hehe Indian Parents crack me up (Patel here.....)

Just do what you want...Yeah your dad will be mad for a couple of days/months; but after you are dropping 5646514654k (and giving me some), while ENJOYING what you do, he is going to be very proud....

umm i would just take a state school and pay for it yourself (go into debt) and major in ANYTHING you want to! a degree is a piece of paper! what you do with the degree is what counts!!!!!!
