Right now I am very angry with my dad. I have been telling him since DECEMBER to do my FAFSA and he always he would do it. Well, recently he told me he did it because I was constantly telling him to do it. Come to find out he lied to me about doing it. The way I found out? I got my $9000 bill for the fall semester yesterday. I don't know what to do!? I feel like if I say anything he will just tell me to go away. Any advice, I kinda need some right now?

Calmly show your dad the bill. Tell him that you need him to submit FAFSA now so that you’ll have your aid for college. Don’t confront him about the lie directly…that will just annoy him.

Perhaps he did submit it, but then you were selected for verification and that never got done???

Technically, you are the one who is supposed to submit FAFSA. You and your Dad each have a PIN number and are supposed to sign FAFSA with them verifying the information is correct. You should be able to go online and check whether FAFSA was submitted. If so, check that you are not supposed to submit additional documentation to the school for verification.

Are you sure you will actually qualify for a lot of aid to cover your costs?

Perhaps your dad was planning on paying for college without applying for federal assistance. Have you and your dad ever discussed how your college will be funded?

Just because you got a bill does not mean your dad did’nt submit FAFSA. Perhaps you were selected for verification & you never sent in the required paperwork or maybe you have to accept your awards & you have’nt done that or maybe you did’nt qualify for federal aid. It should be easy enough to go online & verify if it was submitted ot not.

It is possible all you were eligible for is loans, and the school would not show them as pending credits to tuition if you have not accepted them.

It is possible you have an award package sitting in your student portal that you have not signed in to see yet.

It is possible you have been selected for verification, didn’t log into your student portal, and don’t know it.

It is possible your dad filed the FAFSA but didn’t enter a school code.

Please talk to your dad.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but IF FAFSA was filed then you would have a pin number (and a parent would have a different pin number.) You should be able to log into the FAFSA website with your pin and see what is there. I don’t feel like logging in right now, but there is probably a password retrieval process if you don’t even know if you have a pin.
