My daughter got into Science and Math!!

I started posting here several months ago as I was researching and trying to learn about the college process. My daughter is currently a sophomore HS student. And I thought this was a very good place to go to ask questions. She is very gifted in math and science and is also very well rounded. It has been her dream for well over a year now that she be accepted into the NC School of Science and Mathematics for her Junior and Senior year of HS. This is a very highly respected, residential, yet public school. It is for the academically gifted. She has been literally jumping through hoops in the applications process since October, and I just know that college applications pale compared to this process. It's based on HS rank, SAT grades, level of difficulty in courses, extracurricular activities in school and in the community You must have (one of each) a recommendation from a math teacher, English teacher, science teacher, a personal reference and guidance counselor recommendation. You must write an essay on the application. Then after all that is done, you go to "Discovery Day" where you will take a math test and write yet another essay and tour the school and have information sessions. We LOVE the school.

If you are lucky enough to be admitted from the application pool of about 1200 applicants (a record high this year) that try for a 310 spots for the junior year, upon your graduation from there, you will receive a tuition grant from the State of NC if accepted to any university in the NC university system. (free tuition for 4 years).

This has been my daughter's dream school! If accepted, a student will be able to study so much more in depth than in high school with advanced courses. We have jumped through all these hoops together, have sat on pins and needles as the year, then the months, then the weeks, then the days pass by (ever so slowly) until it finally came. It came today....and.....she was......ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!!!!! WhooHoooo!!!!!

What a wonderful opportunity for our girl! And what's also great about it is that she will be getting a VERY high quality education....free. Free room, board, all meals, medical care, books, everything...free. Thank you state of NC for making her dream come true!!!

I cannot tell you how excited and happy we are!!!! I am SO proud of her!!!!!

And please, fellow parents, don't think I am bragging. I am just SO excited and happy I HAVE to express it in words somewhere...everywhere!!!! I know you all will understand!

I guess this may not belong on a college site, but this will help her to be well on her way into getting into a great college in a couple of years. You all have been so helpful in my past posts so I thought I would share our good news with you all.

WhooHoo!!!

Now......comes the part of realizing she won't be coming home but every 3 weeks for a long weekend......we live 2 and a half hours away. (we are very close too.)

Congatulations!

Congratulations! I've been on campus, it seems like such a neat place.

Congratulations to your daughter!

you are making me smile - Congrats to your daughter - hope she loves it!

Salem: Congratulations!! A great school, and I'm sure she'll love it.

How wonderful for her! Congratulations!

Salem:

I've heard great things about that school. Congrats to your D! How exciting!

Congrats! One of my D's friends is there now and loves it! Hooray!

Congratulations!

Congratulations.

And please, fellow parents, don't think I am bragging

lol uh
ok as a student, congrats to your daughter.

How wonderful. The NC school is the one that my D's school (LSMSA) was based on, and they still have sort of a kinship. The NC kids held fund-raisers for the LSMSA kids who were Katrina affected, and a group of the NC kids and adults are coming down during Spring break to help gut houses for families in need.

By all accounts, it's an awesome school. It's harder sometimes for the parent to adjust to a junior going away to school than it is on the child, but we found the sacrifices to be worth it. (I've posted elsewhere about what a difference LSMSA made in D's outlook and prospects. You'll also be a lot closer driving-wise to your D than we are to mine, so that should help, too).

I personally don't care if you're bragging (though, I don't think you are. Just deliriously happy---as well you should be...), you've come to the right place to share your happy news. I'm so happy for both you and your hard-working and deserving D. Congratulations! Here's wishing that this opportunity is everything she hopes or imagines it to be.

Awwwwwwwwwwww, salem, CONGRATS to your D!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sure she will have a wonderful next two years at this fabulous school! :D

~berurah

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations...two sisters from my church have gone there in recent years and their family has been very happy with the school.
A student from NCSMS won a Park scholarship (the biggie) to NC State this year.

Congratulations Salem! My niece got in also......Actually, lol, I went back and looked at your previous posts to make sure you weren't my sister-in-law.
