My daughter's chances

My daughter is a junior and UGA is her top choice. What do you think are her chances of EA? Should we even try EA or just go RD?

GPA- 4.15 UW 3.8 W
ACT 28 (only took once with no prep)
SAT 560 R 570 M 620 W (again once with no prep, planning to take again)
AP Classes - 6 all other classes were honors

EC - lots of school and church activities

She has a good chance RD. Retake it and get a better score and you are competitive for EA.

Definitely go early action. It is not binding as is early decision so you give up nothing and do demonstrate “interest”.

Your daughter should have a decent chance. I highly recommend checking out the UGA Admissions Blog.

As far as your daughter’s scores are concerned, I recommend working through something like the Princeton Review books for the SAT and ACT. Her ACT score is in the mid 50%, but her SAT scores are a bit lower than the mid 50% for this year’s class. And having taken each test once, she should have a decent idea of what to expect and that should help.

[University of Georgia: News & Information](<a href=“UGA Today - Today’s top news from the University of Georgia”>UGA Today - Today’s top news from the University of Georgia)

This link posts information on this year’s EA admits. The mid 50% for CR & M was 1240-1390, with a writing score of 654. The mid 50% for the ACT was 28-32.

I know for my child it was a relief to know on December 11 that they were in. So, encourage your daughter to keep working hard, talk to her guidance counselor about EA vs. RD, and Good Luck!

I think you should try EA anyway. There’s a very low chance that she’d be rejected outright with that GPA. If she gets in early, that’s great. If not, she’ll have to do the work she would’ve done if she did RD anyway. She should retake at least one of the tests. I think they accept December scores, so she has until then.

Thanks for the responses. I knew her SAT scores were lower than the mid 50%. I kinda figured her GPA would help but just wanted to know what some others thought.

She will be taking the SAT again in June. I had not thought about retaking the ACT but based on her getting that score when she didn’t even finish parts of the exam and the test conditions were not the best (she said it was too cold in the room for her to really concentrate), it probably will be a good idea to retake it as well. She hates taking those tests but has no choice but to retake them.

I also can’t imagine that she’d be rejected outright for EA and think she has a good chance for EA with her current stats.

My child was also a bit freaked out the first time on the ACT and not necessarily finishing each section like on the SAT. It all worked out in the end and they felt more comfortable the second time.

Her GPA is excellent and UGA places more emphasis there than on just test scores. Her GPA and rigor of curriculum reflect 4 years of hard work, not just 4 hours in a cold room.

Good luck with EA and I wish the best for your daughter.

I think your DD has an excellent chance at EA, if she can improve her test score on the SAT by a couple hundred points. The admissions blog really is very helpful and informative. Remember that EA looks at only 3 things: GPA, test scores, and rigor of curriculum. Has she taken a challenging course load of honors or AP/IB classes?

I also forgot to mention that she is currently ranked 5/525 in her HS class.

She has taken AP World History (4) and AP Calc AB. Currently taking AP US History, AP Calc BC. Next year she will be taking AP Language, AP Stat and 2 more that I can’t think of right now. She has been taking either honor or AP for all her core classes.

definately go early action. i got in early and at the time, i had 3.9 UW gpa, 29 ACT, 610 math 670 reading 710 writing
