I've narrowed down my school choices for next year, so that I am choosing between UMiami and UDelaware. I am from right outside of Boston, MA, and the concept of living in nice weather all year greatly appeals to me. Additionally, Miami is a completely different place than Boston, it has a business program that is deemed slightly better than delaware, and it is a more well-known/renowned school.

But, there are a few MAJOR things that are deterring me from going to Miami.

-It is a whopping $20,000 more than Delaware annually.
-According to my tour guide, only 40% of students live on Miami's campus (and that includes all freshmen.) / The school might be a suitcase school and it has the "grandparent factor".
-It seems to me that the majority of partying / social activity occurs off-campus- and I want there to be significant on-campus activity.

I really like Delaware. The campus is gorgeous, the kids seem happy, and there is a great social scene. I worry that the school might be too big, does not have ideal weather (although it is a slight improvement from the weather in boston), and it certainly does not possess the allure that Miami does.

Anyways, if whoever is reading this would be willing to give me some constructive input into my situation or address a claim that I have made regarding either school, I would greatly appreciate it.

Slight improvement??? By extension, wouldn’t that make Durham NC a slight improvement over UDel?

LOL NewHope. About 20 degrees of slight improvement. We’re in the Boston area and the UD flowers bloom at least a month before ours do!
Don’t Miami and UD have about the same size student bodies?

Oh and $80,000 over 4 years? “slight” improvement there, too.

^ My D’s a sophomore at UDel. This year she was THRILLED to get a snow day … following a one inch snowfall! (Last year nada.)

Keep in mind when tuition goes up 5 to 10 percent a year U of Miami goes up 1 to 2 thousand a year over Delaware. Also kids tend to spend more money in Miami (South beach etc)I know 2 kids that left Miami because the “pressure to keep up” cost them lots of $.

When you say “next year”, do you mean that you are starting in 2010, or this fall? If so, you’ve got 3 days to make up your mind.

Personally, I think you should select UD, unless the money really is not an issue, and in that case there are probably still good reasons to go to UD.

Yes misterbill I have until Friday lol
I appreciate the responses btw

MY son is trying to decide between UDEL and Elon. Cost is similiar. He has no idea on a major as of yet. He has 3 days to make a decision. We have not been able to visit elon. Is anyone out there an elon student? We are from NY so traveling to elon is obviously more involved. Also a little concerned about going to a school in the south. Any info appreciated

^ I’m not a student, but my D was accepted at Elon … and decided to attend UDel instead. Elon is located in a small town just off the interstate. It has a particularly lovely campus. The people are friendly. Athletics are big. I’ve heard greek life is also big, but we didn’t experience any of this during our visit. I certainly didn’t consider the school to be “too southern.”

UDel is much larger, and the town of Newark DE is considerably larger (with more things to do) than the small town of Elon NC. My D felt the kids at UDel were more laid back than at Elon, and this was a big part of her decision. YMMV.

You might enjoy the Elon YouTube tour. It doesn’t do justice to the beauty of the campus, but it’s considerably better than nothing!

So, what’s your decision?

I just read this thread. What was your decision? My D applied to Elon, but didn’t get in. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Elon. We also live in NY and my D wants to go to UDel. She got wait-listed and then got in. That has been her first choice from day one. Why do the kids all love UDel so much? I thought the dorms were awful. But, my D says, “I don’t mind. I’m the one staying there, not you.”

DD is another one who loves UD, her friends, her classes, her activities. She can’t exactly articulate it except to say she’s getting depressed about graduating in a year. As for dorms, DD is in a gorgeous airconditioned one this year. She lived in a teeny tiny OLD one last year and was in Lane/Thompson as a freshman Honors. To be honest, I’m sort of glad she had a couple years leaving in dorms that weren’t the Hilton - makes them appreciate home and lowers expectations for their first apartment ;)
