hey guys i REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY want to go to columbia .. since i was little ... and im just a sophomore but i wanted to know what I should build up on so that I could stand out in the applicant pool

are there specific things that I can do to help my resume other than being in all honors and APs??

If you're a girl, you can always apply to Barnyard. The standards of admission there are significantly lower than those at the actual institution of Columbia.

sheldon, that doesn't answer his/her question besides being untrue. See the other Barnard thread for evidence. They are different institutions. This poster's dream is Columbia, not Barnard. Answer his/her question!

secretsanta, I think the first place I'd start is looking through past results threads. Basically just choose ECs carefully. Make sure you love everything you do and that you do it well. Awards are always good. And essays are important. Don't forget fostering relationships with your teachers and counselor. Chances are you are doing everything right already. Just don't slack off and always strive to do better.

Umm...you're rank is not nearly good enough, your courseload doesn't seem difficult, and you've provided no scores.
It's unlikely, but you have some chance...and there's still time to improve!

yes you can, BARNARD IS NOT COLUMBIA COLLEGE/SEAS - just think of it as another college but it is connected to the Columbia University through affliation - as in can take classes at columbia and vice versa.

WAYTOGO88: you can definitely apply to both, but most people only get into one. both institutions look for different things. since columbia has a large applicant pool, your scores and GPA have to be stellar to even get considered. Barnard, on the other hand, has a smaller applicant pool because they are single-sex, and they look beyond test scores and take the personal side of the applicant very seriously (not that columbia doesn't). This is apparent just looking at the differences in the applications: Columbia's requires 1 personal essay, a "why columbia" short answer and a "most significant activity" very short answer. Barnard, on the other hand, requires the Common App personal essay and "most significant activity" short answer, in addition to its four supplement short answers: "why barnard," "favorite character from a book, film, etc.," "an issue to discuss with a government official," and "a daily habit or ritual."
Both are amazing schools and both get a degree issued by the trustees of Columbia University.

as for secretsanta, are you not taking more than one AP because your school doesn't offer them or because you don't think you can handle them? Columbia will get a list of all the APs/IBs your school offers and a list of the ones you took. if your school has more APs and you're not taking them, I would say you have very little chance of getting into Columbia. I also agree with karot, your rank is really low, just barely top 20%. Most, if not all, students who are admitted to Columbia are at least top 10% and many are valedictorians or salutatorians.

wow i never head about this columbia-barnard thing

but anyways im taking all the AP's that my year offers

and all the honors as well

will an alumni relation do anything??
like i know about having good grades and stuff but i want to know if other things will have an impact on it also

like will alot of volunteer work and EC's be good ??

Not a lot. Quality over quantity. Find something you really like, something that you could see yourself doing for a long time and dedicated your time to that.

(as an aside, if you don't like students going to Barnard just because they can't get into Columbia, stop directing them to do so. We don't like that, either. We'd all appreciate it! Thanks, xoxo!)
