My Dream School, Yale

Hi all. I'm an asian kid from CT, I moved here 7 years ago and just got my greencard 2 weeks ago, so I'm not international anymore =). Anyway I would really love to go to Yale, I'm a sophomore right now and I'm doing stuff in school. Here are my stats.

GPA: 4.0 (for now, I got a 71 on an English midterm and that's gonna bring my average in that down to an a-).

Rank: 2/426

Freshman year
Geometry: A+
Biology: A
English: A
World History: A+
Band Class: A+
Spanish 1: A

Sophomore Year
Ap Chem: A (about, not done yet)
Algebra II: A+ (definite, easiest class in the world, play calculator games all period)
English II: A-
Ap European History: A
Spanish II: A
Forensics Science: A

Class for next year:
Ap Physics, Ap US History, Ap English, Precalc, Spanish III, Civics, Introduction to engineering. I don't know about the last 2, got a guidance appointment next week

EC's, probably a bit weak:
Band, Freshman, Sophomore, and most likely all other years.
Tennis, Sophomore, and most likely all other years. Most likely captain, only 2 sophomores on the team, getting better
Swimming, Sophomore, and most likely all other years. Also likely captain, 3 sophomores and I'm good at swimming.
Frisbee club all 4 years
probably gonna join key club next year
Joining student council next year.
Piano for 8 years, I've played in the Young musicians festival, got a gold cup thingy, but my friend says it's for losers so I guess I'm done with the YMF.

PSAT: 193

So my dream school is Yale, I'm interested in math and science, are there any other schools that are good for me? I don't really want to go far from home. Thanks

O yea I'm anxiously waiting for my AP scores, but I think I got 5's on both of them

Also forgot, I have 162.5 community service hours at a summer camp and I'll be working there this summer

Forgot again, I got an award this year for having the highest sohpomore math average. $50 yes!

I would try to work in more APs and bring your standardized test scores up for the real SAT. Your ECs are a little weak, mostly because there isn't much focus. If you focus your ECs more and show leadership in them, I think you have a shot, but of course with the top ivies you can't predict much and they are a reach for everyone.

Well, I'm only a sophomore, they only opened up a second ap for sophomores this year. I'm taking 3 ap's next year, and probably gonna be taking a lot of ap's senior year. What do you mean focused? I'm going to continue with my seasonal ec's till I'm done with high school, and I'll have a leadership position in tennis and swimming, probably, and maybe I'll be drum major for band. I'm going to start volunteering at griffin hospital next year. I also got an SAT book and am taking the chemistry sat II's in June.

haha thats cool, but not going to help u :)

u need some state/national science and math awards. good luck

like doing really well on the amc test? Or like a math team thing? I don't know if we have the math team though

haha yeah AMCs are good. but theyre hard. or at least for me. but i'm stupid

i studied for like a month and only got like an 100 on the AMC12. but then again i had like a 40 something the year before. HEHE!

lol the highest on the amc 10 was like an 80 at our school. I think I got like a 60 something, I didn't study though, should I have?

Also, what should I do to increase my chances? Part time job? I was also thinking of joining the orchestra this year, but I thought I wouldn't have time, but seeing how other people seem to be able to juggle 9 ap classes, 3 sports, part time job, and play at carnegie hall, I guess I can make time for it.

bump 10char

Well, your objective stats are awesome. If you really want Yale, what you've got to do is find a passion and pursue it. Pretty simple. That AMC test is a good place to start. Now, with your sports and band and stuff, you have a decent shot, if you maintain your awesome grades and get some leadership roles in those areas. But I think finding a really awesome passion, even if you don't win a bunch of awards in it, but can write about it effectively and do stuff in your free time to pursue it, will do the most to improve your chances at Yale.

Best of luck. You're obviously doing what you need to do in school, and as a Sophomore, you've still got time to make your college application something awesome. Again, good luck!

like you mentioned before, if you know that your school doesn't have a math team, and you would like to pursue math, then start one. Show passion in your activites. Get your SAT score up (from looking at your PSAT), maintain your grades, and you're golden.
