My essay doesn't fit in the space provided on the Common App. Am I allowed to just print it out and mail it to them? Help!

Yes. Note on the Common App. that you will be mailing your essays and send them to:

Application Coordinator
Office of Undergraduate Admissions
Johns Hopkins University
140 Garland Hall
3400 N. Charles Street
Baltimore, MD 21218

Include your full name and birth date on everything you send.

By sending it in printed form, they will consider it just as if it was submitted online with the supplement?

I'm sending them a few other supplemental things, so I don't want them to suddenly miss this and assume I didn't have a $10 essay. What do I put in the space provided on the online supplement?

Thanks!

Yes, your essays will be considered if sent with other supplemental materials -- they won't go missing.

In the online supplement you may just write...
"Please note, essays were mailed separately."

Ahh.. thank you so much laxfan! I'll be taking my supplemental forms and essay to the mailbox right now. I appreciate the help!

What if I never noted in the online form that I am mailing them? Are admissions people going to think I don't have one?

whenwillitbeover, I think the best thing you could do right now is to call and tell them, but in my own personal opinion, they can probably figure it out. Call them anyway!

whenwillitbeover, do not call. This is not something we can check on right now. But there is no need to worry. When application materials are processed we check for their complete status. An essay is a required element to be complete. You will be contacted if your essays are not processed.

The check-box on the online form is just a back-up system. It is the physical copy of the essay(s) that matter - whether mailed or submitted online.

Cheers.

thanx AdmissionsDaniel, i won't call

but i applied using the common app, and the supplement says the jhu essays are optional......but i sent the jhu essays in the mail without noting that in the online supplement....so i am worried that my application will be considered complete (the essay is the common app essay) even without the supplemental jhu essays sent in the mail

Your application will be considered complete with just the CA essay. Therefore there is a possibility your app. will be reviewed with out the supplemental essays. However, don't worry about that...

If you mailed your supp. essays before 1/15 then those documents will get processed before the deadline and added to your file. Once added, if your file had been reviewed, it will be looked at again with these new essays. The check-box does not matter.

great...mine were postmark 1/14...but how can i make sure my app was evaluated WITH the supplemental essays instead of without?? I'm worried that they somehow won't get added, like lost in the mail or in the piles of mail jhu is getting. When I get confirmation that my application is complete, will it say everything that is included in my app (so I will know if that includes the supplemental essays)?? Or should I call at that point if it doesn't specify, just to make sure?

whenwillitbeover, as laxfan stated if your essays were postmarked before 1/15 they will be added to your file and your app. will be reviewed with them before an admissions decision is rendered.

You will not get a confirmation that your application is complete, but rather a postcard that states your application is received. You will be contacted if something is missing. It is impossible for us to contact each applicant with details on each piece of their application received.

Cheers.

ok, thanks AdmissionsDaniel and laxfan!

"you will be contacted if something is missing"....just wondering, does this include whether optional essays are missing, considering they are highly recommended and as a result those who do not send them are unusual?
