the essay for the common app. i definitely think it is impossible for it to be 500 words... and 700 is still unlikely.... omg... is it really necessary for me to cut it down?

yea...i would

around how many words should i keep it??
oh god this is gonna be so hard!

ask for help and send it to people on here to review it, they can help you take out what they thought was unnecessary

I would say not. The Common Application gives you no limit. Why should you place a number on your creativity when it's not strictly necessary?

^^^that's what i'm thinking too. Mine is 1010, but it's the best thing i've written for a while. I've gotten to the point where if I chop it down any further, I'll be choppin the good wood. I'm going to send it in to the smaller, less admissions-crazy colleges (oberlin, kenyon, bennington, scripps) in hopes that they'll understand, and wait a while and try to edit it down for the ivies on my list and top LACs, who probably won't be as forgiving.

I would shorten it.

Don't fall in love with your own writing.

Mine was 1170 words and it was seriously the greatest thing I have ever written. I just couldn't shorten it. I say if the common app gives no limit, you shouldn't shorten it.

Having the same problem. I shortened as much as I possibly could without removing the meat of the essay (880 words roughly). There is no limit so I wouldn't worry. I would try to stay under 1000 if it is all possible.

Even if you think its fine, try to be concise and simple (just dont remove the meat of the essay while doing it)
