Hi all,

So I'm a new member at CC and can't PM yet but if anyone is interested in helping me out we can sort it out by email if that's fine. My issue is that I've been struggling for so long with my college essay, and I finally wrote it last weekend and it's pretty terrible and sounds clich

Don’t write about all the places where you’ve lived and all the things you’ve achieved there. That could be boring. Pick one place. Describe it (if necessary). Write about something that happened there after which you had a little moment of self-discovery. Sometimes it seems like there’s nothing significant to write about but just start thinking about things that you’ve done or that have happened to you. Anything that seems to stand out in your mind. It doesn’t have to be something grand. It can be really mundane. As long as you can analyse it and write about how it affected your character or what it meant to you, you can write a great essay.

There’s more than one way to write an essay so don’t strictly follow that, but that’s how I did it. I hope this helps. Good luck with your application. I’m an international student myself. :)

Oh that’s cool, thank you for your reply! What I’ve done is that I described where I grew up and I’m comparing what I’ve learnt from where I am now to back then, I guess it makes sense to focus on something that has particularly affected me.

I picked the prompt that says “some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it” so I thought it would be important to mention where I’m from and describe how it has shaped me. Again, thank you :)
