My essays were stolen

As the title says, a flashdrive of mine containing my essays, test scores, transcripts, and PDF copies of my common applications was stolen from me at school. It was returned to me nearly a week later with all of these files missing. I am currently involved with school authorities and counselors tracking down the culprits using computer logs, cameras, and witness reports. The drive contained other sensitive info i wont disclose on here. I have taken care of securing and protecting the accounts that could have been compromised due to losing this drive, and the only variables i have left are my essays/PDF copies of my common applications. As I see it, they cannot really use those PDF copies of my application for anything (these are the PDFs that you can download off the CA website itself after submitting an app)

My question to you all is:
If one of these scumbags tries to use my essay or sell my essay online, will colleges be able to see that? How should i avoid having problems with my essays? Is there a way to screen the internet for the essays? I already submitted the common applications using this essays several weeks prior to losing the drive. I would hate for my the last 12 years of work go to waste because of these kids.

As you can imagine, I am absolutely freaking out over all the compromised information, plus 5 AP classes, 2 jobs, and lacrosse. I could really use some insight and help, people :(

Would this be a good way to check if this essay is being distributed?

if you have filed a report (with police, security, etc.) detailing what happened and documenting the exact dates, etc. then just hold onto those papers, and if you suspect or are told by a college that your essay was used by someone else - you’ll have the documentation to prove it was yours & stolen.

I know this is a horrible thing to have happen to you and i’m sorry that it did. at least you already applied & submitted the essays - could have been worse.

this is too stressful of a time to allow more stress in. Focus on the positive side of it, trust the people helping you to recover it, and take time to breathe deeply to keep your calm. it will all work out in the big scheme of Things, and you’ll have a great essay story for grad school apps on how you over came a challenge!
