My expectations vs. reality college search

I am going to be applying to colleges this fall and I have no idea where to apply. I thought I was going to apply to Harvey Mudd and Cal PolySLO but my sat scores are completely horrible. I know now that I was quite delusional; however, I dont know where to apply!

WGPA: 4.16
SAT:1770
Ap Scores:
-AP Bio: 3
-AP USH: 3
-AP Euro: 4
-AP English Lang: 5
-AP Psychology: 4
-AP Chem: 1 (I did not understand my teachers teaching method nor did a majority of the class)
Sports:
Field Hockey (2 years varsity and 1 jv)
Soccer (2 years 1 jv and 1 freshman)
Track (1 year jv)

Job: Intern at JCVI (genomics research institute)

clubs:
CSF-honors society
NHS-honors society
BSU-black student union, treasurer
Key Club-community service events

I am a hispanic female looking to study Engineering.
Currently I am taking AP Calc BC, AP Lit, AP Physics, american government, and intro to art
Any suggestions please that might complement my stats?

One approach is to look at SAT-optional schools - [SAT/ACT Optional 4-Year Universities | FairTest](ACT/SAT Optional List - Fairtest)
I know for example, that WPI is one engineering school that is test-optional (you do have to submit supplementary materials).
This has been discussed before, here is one thread to read:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1373734-best-engineering-schools-high-gpa-low-sat-act.html?highlight=engineering+sat+optional</a>
There may be others, trying searching around. Also look at the Engineering Majors forum for ideas.

Also, you have two things working in your favor (beyond your GPA and other qualifications of course) when applying to engineering programs:
you are female and Hispanic. Both are seriously underrepresented in the engineering world! Employers AND colleges are working hard to attract these students.

Try the ACT; some students do better on the ACT than they do on the SAT.

Note that Cal Poly SLO considers only the CR and M parts of the SAT. Its 2011 freshman class profile says that engineering freshmen had GPAs averaging 3.94 (presumably calculated by CSU method with limited weighting) and SAT CR+M averaging 1299. You probably have some chance there.

If you are in-state for California (i.e. in-state tuition and financial aid), several UCs admitted most engineering applicants with your stats in 2008-2009 (latest year in [University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu) ; note that the UCs tend to emphasize GPA more than test scores): Davis, Irvine, Merced, Riverside, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz. Even San Diego was a fair shot that year with your stats. However, selectivity may have increased since then.

Other CSUs may also be good chances. San Jose State’s thresholds for fall 2012 admissions are given here: [SJSU Admission](http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/admission/rec-1045.html)

Thank you!
