Awhile ago someone asked me to post briefly about my experience transferring to Barnard. I only joined the Barnard community this semester, so it has only been about a month, but I feel that has been enough time for me to know for sure that I made the right decision. First of all, the actual orientation process was great; while I didn’t love every activity, the coordinators and admin definitely went out of their way to ease our transition, and it gave me a great first impression of the school.

Secondly, the classes are fantastic. All of mine this semester are at Barnard (though I know many transfers who have half or the majority of their classes at Columbia), and I find that they all are taught by great professors and are highly interesting as well as rigorous, which is exactly what I was looking for.

In terms of getting to know people, I highly suggest joining clubs and getting involved on campus. It’s possible to make friends in classes too, but most of the people who I hang out with I met outside the classroom. I am friends with a few other transfers, so that’s a good place to start, but it’s definitely worth it to go out and find people with similar interests as well. I would also recommend taking advantage of opportunities offered by both BC and CC… for example, I went to hear a guest lecturer on a whim and ended up with a great contact in the field I’m interested in pursuing as a career. The city also affords a great deal of opportunities within itself, so that should also definitely be taken advantage of.

I don’t want to keep going on forever, so that’s a basic summary of my experience thus far. I love the classes, I love the school environment and I love the city. It is definitely a transition… but if you get involved and take advantage of the opportunities, it could definitely be worth it. Hope this helps anyone who’s thinking about transferring, and good luck!
