My Fall Chem 1A Grade

For those of you who have taken chem 1A in the fall and probably have a decent idea of how the grading scale is these are my scores: 46/75, 42/100 (epic fail I know), and 66/100. These are horrible scores again, I know. But in regards to the curve what would you project my grade is so far....I'm so scared.

I project a C or C+. Don’t they have the point breakdown for grades in the syllabus? They will curve even more than what that says (but that depends on how the class does as a whole).

C+ sounds about right (depending on how the second middy went for everyone). Maybe B-. You’re not on the low end of class, but not middle either. Just don’t fail your final. Sucha**. SMH. To this day, dropping me 7 or 8% still *es me off (and ending up with a B in the damn class).

JB you finished slaying the beast that is the paper?

@Batman: I kinda finished it over the weekend, and have since been doing minor edits here and there. I should really be hammering it to perfection (seeing how I’m not going superbly in the class) but I am so over it. I am about to print it out and email it right now.

daaaaaaaaaamn lookatchu. i’m only on my second page. *****ing phail. i’m not doing hot too and i’m not super stoked to see my grade on simm’s test

frakken open office. lol my microsoft office expired :frowning: Dunno if OO can save in doc format.haha might have to export to pdf hmm

i’m not doing hot and i’m not even in chem 1a. ugh. I have a f u ckin essay dueeee!!! and it’s like less than half done.

Bump! Bump!

I’m in the same position so far, does the final kill your grade by that much? Do at least some people improve their grade with the final??? It’s 45% of the grade so I need it to help boost it up

Honestly, i’ve only had maybe a couple finals help my grade. Most of the time, finals will lower them/keep them as is. 45 is a huge chunk though. lol It’ll improve your grade if you can get above the average by probably a SD, although 2 SD definitely will help you.

getting a better grade on finals always help a little. but don’t forget this is the chem1A final. it is tedious. when i took it i thought it was kinda like the 2nd midterm, proximal difficulty but wayyyyyyy longer. it felt endless.

I don’t mean to tag onto your thread but Batman could you project my grade?

42/75, 69/100, 76/100.

@dcalbano: I’m not Batman, buuut I would say you’re in the B range…

I’d agree with whosthat. You guys don’t happen to know the average/mean do you? It would make speculating a whole lot easier.
Harshly graded (very unlikely): you’d be in the C range. But I would say B-/B right now. I think you’ll probably end up with a solid B if you do average on the final. If you do poor, probably B-. Unless they really lower the cutoffs, I’d say a B+ would take a kickass score on the final.

I know that for the last midterm the one I scored 76 the average was 72. They’ve always been in the early to mid 70’s. They say that 70-85 is the B range but from experience to you guys know if they drop that percentage? I can’t tell if I’m doing average or worse than everyone else but I feel like worse…

I think when I took it (a while ago, Fall 08), the grade distributions were something like… A: 88% and up ; A-: 83-88% etc so yeah they will probably lower the cut-offs.

But keep in mind these are post-final percentages. Our final had an average in the mid-60’s. A lot of people’s grades went down… I went from something like 96% –> 89%. My percentage is “high” because this was back when labs counted toward your grade.

I doubt it was 5 percent for the A- :\ I had a 92% going in (or so I was told by my GSI) and was dropped like 8 percent by the damn final. Ended up with a B. ****** class.

wait so why did you guys predict zorro’s final grade to be like a C+ or w/e, but dcalbano’s grade to be a B- …even though her scores are way better/

argh, i’m scared too. in a “similar” position like Zorro, but I did a little better on all 3 tests lol…

It’s the border between a B- and B, not a B- and C+ (so like 83/84 percent). Honestly, the last thing I want to do is project a grade that is too high (because I don’t know your SDs and all) and you go in to your final thinking you’re set and you end up with something lower.
In general (or how I see it), unless you absolutely fail all three tests (like below 50-55% each time), you’ll end up with a C or a B just because it’s Chem1A. An A is the one that takes more work.

How much do you guys think the curve actually helps us if we’re at a C right now? could the final help boost it to a B with the curve. From stacy’s grade distribution from last year only the bottom 20% had C’s while everyone else had a B- or higher. I’m really hoping that make the C/B distinction much easier.

I feel like the people who would get A’s in this class got into MIT…Seriously, who is getting the A’s? Just sayin’…
