I'm an interesting person that knows how to write and interviews well.
In GA. I hope instate helps lol.

Hmm...lemme say this: I can't make judgements since a lot of people with great stats don't get it and some people with just good stats do. I'm also not the admissions committee. From what I understand though, the key is the passion for something and/or an achievement of excellence as well as a capacity to interview well. High stats will get you in the door and might get you invited to the interview, but you really have to "wow" them with superior knowledge of some subject or have an outstanding volunteer activity (not just hours- think managing a political campaign) or be an amazing scholar athlete.

To give you a real perspective of your chances, I'd have to meet you in person and see your entire application, along with the application of everyone else who applied. There are so many high stat people that apply (around 800 last year) that you have to do something to stand out, not in a gimmicky way, but in a way that shows you'll contribute to the university and be at the top of the class. Bottom Line: Show interest, write an excellent application that reflects your personal strengths, and then wow them at the weekend.

P.S. We have a ton of instaters this year and then a majority of out-of-staters from the year before. Dunno what they'll do this year.

Yeah I thought you might want an example, so, at the risk of having my identity revealed...

I'm a Civil War and history buff in general, as well as a student of current events both domestic and international. Thus I wrote my personal statement about my love for history and filled it with tons of real-life examples. I wrote the application essay about the need for more effective political action, and, sure enough, both of these topics came up in my interview. I had good stats and a small number of awards/ECs then plus I had shown a great deal of interest in the program at every college fair and school visit I went to, but the clincher was probably the interview and the discussions at the weekend when I was able to really show them what I knew. It wasn't a crazy awesome amazing hook on paper, but in person it worked well.

That's pretty much all I can say without getting into too many details. It's just one way one person got it and is probably very different from what people with other interests did. All I know is that they did an excellent job in selecting the people and everyone who gets it is really qualified and incredible in some way or another.

Well now that I think about it I don't want to leave you guys hanging, so I'll hazard a few opinions.

Satanic Monkey: Your GPA is a little low, but you appear to have some good ECs that could make up for that. The essays will probably be pretty important for your app. so be sure to do a good job on those.

Paintonmyface: It sounds like you maxed out all the opportunities that you could do at your high school and have some interesting ECs. Again, the essays will probably be important for you to explain what you're really passionate about and demonstrate the depth of your involvement for something.

Thanks so much, vig! That's exactly what I wanted to know. I just visited this weekend for Scholars Day and loved it, so I really hope that I at least get invited to the finalist weekend.
