My final answer is Duke over these choices, what's yours?

I'd bet nurjahan never actually got into Duke. More likely than not he is just pretending UVA is on the same level as elites so he can use this annoymous internet forum to boost his self esteem.

Duke over UMich Honors and Cornell

hmm.. trackstar...nice try... but I did get into Duke..
and I did turn DOWN Duke for UVa Honors.

thoughtprocess...
you cant even compare William and Mary- its not even the same caliber and in the top 25 schools..
and ihave to say.. you are very biased- i mean you "wouldn't even go to UVA over any top 25 private..." I mean, lets faceit.. Uva is better or comparable to georgetown or Emory...

maybe you will see 8 years from now... when you have finished med school and have over 400K Debt.. then only you will see that going instate for undergrad was worth it if you are from virginia...(i mean other states have crappy instate schools so it is worth to go private for them)
and who said that students from UVa can't get into Harvard/Duke/UVa's Med Schools ? Lot of UVA students did ..just like Duke students..
--so my point is that only grad/medical/dental schools matter in life.. undergrad institutions really don't.. I mean it DOEs matter if you compare VCU and Duke, but between Uva or Duke or harvard for examply, it really doesn't

--and wow- I am amazed how arrogant and narrowminded Duke students are.. At no point have I said that DUke is bad... you all just started bashing that Uva is not top notch.. which in fact it is (it may not be Duke..but it is comparable to Duke)
--judging from this I think I made the right decision- I would not want to spend 4 years where the students are narrow-minded and full of hubris.

-And Xeneise-- At no point have I insulted Duke and such is not my intention..
-Trackstar.. saying that you are elite doesn't make you elite..- just saying that you are elite makes us wonder how opinionated you all must be - Duke name won't get you anywhere... (unless you ahve the grades and the character)

who cares? people can make whatever decisions they want, why do you care so much what other people decide? let em be

thank you..
the topic was which college you decided and I put down my choice with explanation... and they just started to defend duke..

"---simply because UVA's honors program is so much better.."

And then we all describe why its not. I don't see whats so wrong with that? One opinion versus another.

By the way, the scholarship I got (Echols) didn't have any money involved which was a bummer. Glad you don't have to go into debt. I'm glad Duke shells out 25g's every year so I don't.

people are just foolish....in running after 'name' and 'prestige'-..name and prestige wont get you anywhere

[/quote]

Duke is more than 'name' and 'prestige'... I think a reason why people are annoyed is that you are calling people who didn't make your decision 'foolish'. I don't know if this was slightly out of jest or not.. but if it was, it sure didn't seem like it.

However, I will agree with you that UVA Honors definitely gives a high quality education for a low price and it isn't ludicrious to say that UVA & Duke offer educations of similar quality. UVA is a great school and I hope that you enjoy your time there!

thoughtprocess: UVA instate tuition+room+board- less than 20K
Duke tuition +room+board- 47 K
and i know that echols doesn't have schlarship=- even without monetary scholarship, uva costs less than duke

now,- i know that many people go to duke because they like it and not because of name and prestige -i was referring to the people who just blindly run after rankings and not see different schools

and thank you coolatroopa for agreeing wiith me... that was my point..

Good, now kindly leave this forum nurjahan and hang out in the UVA board.

nurjahan,

I think the point of this thread was for Duke students to compare which other schools they got into, but I suppose if you really want to post that you turned down a college on its own board you have the right to do so.

I never stated that UVA couldn't give you a similar education to Duke. UVA is one of the premier schools in the country. It's a win-win when deciding between the two. Also, I really don't think your cost of attendence point holds that much water, considering many pay no where near full tuition (I know I wouldn't have decided on Duke had that been the case) because of need based aid and scholarships, and people make their own financial decisions based on their own circumstances.

Good luck at UVA!

thank you. i know in my package i would have to pay pretty much full tuition for Duke had i gone there... and i assume it is the case with most upper (or upper middle) class families who make good money but not that much.. and also in Duke, you have to take out lot of loans (like perkins and etc).
-and that loan is part of the financial aid package..
(i also didnt receive aid from uva, but it is instate tuition)
---i dont understand why Duke doesnot follow what princeton and uva did- like just convert all loans to grants...

Well...my aid is grants...I'm not sure why you would compare UVA's fin aid to Duke's.
UVA gives less financial aid to begin with, so naturally its easier to give out a higher proportion of grants than loans - Duke is need blind and needs to cover every student with need, which ends up being a larger absolute amount. That makes it harder for it to cover everything by grants, even though I've had nothing but grants.

University of Chicago over Duke here. You can't beat Chicago undergrad!

well no- uva doesnt give out less grants because you are only expected to pay the EFC amount:
whatever the difference is between the total college cost and EFC: UVA gives out all Grants while duke has grants + loans + work-study

Congrats on Chicago though!

Duke does! :) lol

yeah that was my choice and i went for duke! so glad i did it!

this thread sure brings out the bitter, first nurjahan and now Pennpenn.

Here are a few comments that Pennpenn made on June 11th:
"-If you're looking for the best MBA program - consider Chicago. Only a Wharton MBA rivals a Chicago MBA...nothing else comes close."

"You all mention Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, etc..., but do not forget about some of the most sought after economics students at the University of Chicago!"

"the reality is that the University of Chicago is the absolute best school for an undergraduate education - hands down."

"If you're looking for the best MBA program - consider Chicago. Only a Wharton MBA rivals a Chicago MBA...nothing else comes close."

Not only did he claim to turn down Duke on a "Why Duke Over ____" thread, but this rather pathetic prestige driven child also writes on June 14th:

"UChicago over Stanford here. Nothing beats Chicago undergrad!!"

Right. Duke and Stanford obviously safeties.

But fortunately this "expert" cough i mean wharton ed reject cough i mean pfrosh troll, asked on june 14th:

"Chicago vs. Wharton
What are the benefits of an undergraduate study of economics at Chicago rather than at Wharton?"
