My final chance thread

Thank you very much JustinBryce
oohtobeagooner, yeah i know  thank you for the input.

bump10char. I’ll chance back.

*your not you’re in that last section. Oops.

you have great chances, Marcelo. Be more confident in yourself! I think you’ll get into most of those schools. Your scores+ECs are solid.

I have a feeling that most of the feedback you’ve received thus far is pretty much reflective of most comments that people’d have about ur chances.
Therefore, PLEASE don’t bump too much more… please give some of the other threads a chance to get some comments/feedback too.

Good luck!

The only issue regarding international students is that they sometimes get denied any sort of aid. In terms of Ivy/top tier schools, they can be very expensive. For example, I have a friend who goes to Uchicago, and will graduate with 250,000+ debt… If you can afford that sort of financial burden, that is fantastic and I wish you the best. Otherwise, I would stick to honors colleges and the like that are very cost-effective(Macaulay or free rides).
I say this with the cynical viewpoint of a poor student aha, but you have to really weigh Ivy league schools with the amount of money they require, especially if you are considering graduate school. It’s definitely going to be heartbreaking to turn down Stanford/Cornell/etc. but that may be the choice you have to make. I honestly don’t think the education will vary much either, as long as you are not attending a community college or the like. I would definitely try for as many scholarships as possible. I know Mensa has promised to pay for my room/board/books :D. There are many similar scholarships, and SO MANY essay scholarships that you are sure to do well on, considering your backstory.
In all, good luck and sorry for the long post/rant!

Thank you for the post, yes you’re right i’ve been thinking about applying to Macaulay and a couple of other honors colleges although i’ve contacted directly all the schools in my list and they have told me that, in case of acceptance, they commit to meet my financial need but they have made very clear is that the competition for financial aid is very tough for internationals. Where can i find scholarships like the MENSA one that you mentioned?

Well, uh, you have to belong to MENSA to apply for that scholarship. If you are not a member, you would not qualify for such scholarship. They do not have much money for funding, but they do have local groups that help out the younger members, especially those attempting to attend college.
As for other scholarships, I know many large corporations like Coca-Cola, Intel, etc give scholarships based on certain requirements. You would have to look further into that, but Google should help a lot. Essay-based scholarships are usually done through your school, but as an international student…I would look online.

Ohh i see, thank you :)

I don’t know enough about the international process to accurately chance you. You have the stats, but what did you do in the two years after high school that make you stand out? Need blind schools are you friend, bud! If you simply wanna go to school in the US, cast a wider net.

I worked as contruction worker and tutor after HS, and yes i’m also applying to colgate, trinity, berea and st.lawrence. Thanks.

strong candidate, URM with a great rank and good SAT score, should have a great shot for every school you apply

Thank you man.

-Harvard - 12/100 because normally its 6/100, you’re a good applicant but… international
-Stanford 15/100 same as above
-U.Chicago 22/100
-Columbia 15/100
-Duke 25/100
-UPenn 15/100
-Amherst 30/100
-JHU 30/100
-Middlebury 30/100
-Vassar College 35/100

Just because you’re international, your chances get cut in half, if not more.

Thank you hokage

You fit the profile for all of those schools, but then again, so do 70% of their applicants. If you can write some great essays, I don’t see why you wouldn’t get into SOME of them, but competition is fierce nonetheless. Good luck!

You are a very strong candidate. I would say that you would be an extremely strong candidate if your SATs were higher. That being said, you are a URM, with incredible SATIIs, amazing class rank, and great ECs. All of these schools are within your grasp. To tell you the truth, I wouldnt be surprised if you got into Harvard.

Wow your post is very encouraging, thank you very much!

Thanks everyone for the inputs.

-Harvard - reach, unpredictable
-Stanford - reach, unpredictable
-U.Chicago - low reach
-Columbia - reach, unpredictable
-Duke - high match
-UPenn - high match
-Amherst - match
-JHU - high match
-Middlebury - match
-Vassar College - match
