Also, during the end of my junior yr, my father lost his job. As a result I worked during the summer to help pay the bills, and the mortgage at a physicians clinic.
During the beginning of senior yr, my father had kidney failure and was unable to take care of himself. As a result, I have been taking care of him by taking him for dialysis etc. I also took another job during the yr which resulted in relatively little time for studies. However, I tried my best to maintain teh household and my grades. My personal essay was about his diagnosis and how it affected andd made me grow, etc.

I also wrote another essay on poverty and how I overcame it. Finally, I wrote an essay on my participation in an ancient medicine factory in India where I created mediciens and helped run a clinic.

Ye my mid year grades have taken a beating as a result of my current situation. Please be honest about my chances. My gc however is writing a letter about the dip due to extenuating circumstances.

Be honest guys. I sent 2 additional essays and 1 rec that I thought were strong and further showed me as a well-rounded person. I poured my heart in these essays and letting the admissions officers know about how all this has greatly affected and changed me for the better.

In short, what are my chances at these schools? What schools do you think I should expect acceptances from, and what schools should I accept waitlists/rejections. Thank you so much.

iwtc

bumpppppppp. Please people rate my chances. What schools should I expect rejections from? or acceptances? Thank you

bumpppppppppppppppppp

OK...

NYU - Maybe
Dartmouth - Reject
UChicago - Reject
Cornell - Reject
JHU - Reject
CMU - Reject
BU - Maybe
BC - Reject

what were your safeties

you need to reasses your own ability. a 28 ACT is equivalent to something in the 1200's, which is far too low for any of those schools, except possibly BU. Even your GPA (which is just decent for these schools) can't salvage you're poor scores. Amptron2x couldn't have said it any better, except I think you're in at BU and rejected at NYU.

oh man I didnt know my chances were that bad. I wrote 2 essays dealing with my current situation and how I have worked for the past 7 months to take care of the family. I know my scores arent high, but do you think they will take this situation into consideration? I really do love these schools and have sent everything that I possibily could including a research abstract, an essay dealing with my passion of ayurveda and medicine, and an essay dealing with my current situation for the past year. Wow thanks for your honest responses.

btw im instate for cornell and nyu and I applied to Human ecology at cornell

Your story is sad. And it might explain a term or two of lower grades. But it really won't explain a low ACT score and stats in general way below that of most of these schools. I think Dartmouth and Chicago would have a hard time accepting a blind, urm, star athlete with a 28 ACT.

How about a safety and then transfer?

BTW, while parts of Cornell are SUNY, NYU is not a state school.

the Human Ecology school is Suny. I applied there. How are my chances there?

btw can any of you critique one of my essays. I sent 2 additional essays with one dealing about a particulary experience of mine and how it will help. Can any of you take a look at it?

I would take a look at your essay for you

I don't think the outlook is as bad as the posts above would make it seem, sure you may be out of the running for Cornell or U. Chicago, your personal experience will lend you a hook

You may be a match for BU and BC or NYU, the only thing holding you back would be your ACT score, which does not add up considering your courses and grades

Your passion shows through in your ECs, that will be a plus in the application process

As I said, the only thing between you and some of those more selective schools is that 28

but its not all wasted, someone above mentioned transferring

Anyways, with your passion, drive and maturity, being at a "name" school is not going to keep you from being successful

will cornell, uchic, dartmouth, jhu, and cmu still be super-reaches? Or can I safely call them reaches (notice the irony)

Honestly, with qestions like that, just look at each schools stats. You would have to believe your life story, Ecs and recs are unbelievably unusual to get into schools where your stats are much below average. It hppens. Not often, but who knows? But hopefull youre not here for those with stats lower than yours to assure you you're a shoo in at Harvard.

suze: do you think I should expect mostly rejections though? I tried to make my app as unique as possible (work in ancient medical clinic etc). I wrote essays on this and my recent experiences. Will this place any weight?

btw I received my sat results:1940. I guess there a tadbit higher than my ACT. I also applied to the HEOP program at Cornell University (program for low income students). How do you guys rate my chances now?( also sent additional rec, 2 supp essays, and research abstrac)

I hate to tell you this, but they are all pretty reach-y except NYU, BU and maybe even BC?

Oh and for CMU, my cousin got in there as an international with lower SAT scores (1090) but she had good ECs, so you never know.

do you think its possible for me to get into at least one of my reaches?

bumpppppppppp

i honestly dont know. it might be reasonable to get a waitlist but i highly doubt youll be a shoe-in anywhere.
