if ur poor, which youre saying you are, how will you pay for cornell and chicago and stuff?
i dont think they will give you a full ride, just being honest
otherwise i think youll get in but you should have some safeties

for cornell, I applied to their HEOP program and their instate school (college of human eco). Chicago, I hope to get some money; if not any then I probably wont go. Haha im confused. Some people say that ill get in, while others are saying I have a snow balls chance in hell. IDK what to think.

thanks for the critiques btw :)

umppppppppppppppppp

The schools you listed are reaches. However, assuming you wrote good essays, I think it still could be possible for you to be accepted to at least one. I had a friend who was in a very similar situation as your's, with nearly identical stats (although her SAT was a bit higher) and she was accepted at the University of Michigan and Dartmouth. Surprises can happen.

It's true, your ACT is low for those schools (it's too bad you didn't take the SAT, since your score on that was higher), but your personal situation is legit. Admissions officers aren't heartless monsters, they will take that into consideration. Your grades aren't perfect, but they're not horrible either. Your ECs are interesting too, not so much that they're medical related, but how you pursued that interest.

In the end, what we tell you on this board doesn't matter. We aren't admissions officers, and to be honest, some of the posters here are very pessimistic. Even if you don't get into your first choices, remember: you are STILL going to go to a good university (contrary to popular belief, the ivies aren't the only good colleges out there ...), and if you work hard in undergrad, who knows ... maybe you'll end up at Harvard grad school!

Don't lose faith, iwannatopcollege! :)

As far as financial aide goes, unless you're very poor, or a minority (which you aren't) I think you're going to have a hard time at your top choices considering that your stats are very borderline for them anyway. Some of the lower tier colleges might be willing to cough something up, though.

Look around for scholarships on the internet.

Just apply and find out. =] That's my advice.

Well ur scores and GPA did take a beating...but dude if your admissions officer is as sympathetic as me u'll have a fair chance...i know how hard it is to maintail grades and such when your family is in trouble (my mom had a severe depression for two years and tried to commit suicide twice)...how did you work at a factory in India? are you from Idia???

YOU ARE SO RIGHT!!! if you work hard in undergrad you might even get into an ivy grad...{{{{{{{{{{HUG}}}}}}}}} i'll pray for you :D

bouncechrissy: my parents make a total income of around 20,000 (+-4000) for a family of 4.
I really appreciate the suggestions. My dream actually is to go to harvard med school. I hope Im not an automatic reject because I presented myself in the best possible light considering my situation. I tried to show growth, maturity, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I really appreciate it.

p.s. yes I am from india :)

Yea no offense but even if you DO get into, say BU or BC, I doubt they'll give you much money.

See, I came to my college on a full scholarship but there is still food costs, book costs, etc. Book costs alone will be about 300-500 dollars and you got other stuff to blow money on.

You might have to take out massive loans because the overall college expenses for a year is about 50k including everything.

do you possibly think I could get into cornell (through heop) or chicago, jhu, or cmu? possibly

I agree with this list that was previously posted:
NYU - Maybe
Dartmouth - Reject
UChicago - Reject
Cornell - Reject
JHU - Reject
CMU - Reject
BU - Maybe
BC - Reject

But at best I'd give you:
NYU - Accept
Dartmouth - Reject
UChicago - Reject
Cornell - Reject
JHU - Reject
CMU - Reject
BU - Accept
BC - Accept

Unfortunately, NYU will probably make you pay 40k a year or take out that much in loans.

BC/BU are not known for financial aid either and for NYU/BC/BU I think you'll either get waitlisted, or accepted and forced to pay huge amounts of money for college or take out the necessary loans.

Unfortunately, NYU/BC/BU are usually not worth huge loans since I don't think you'll ever be able to pay them off, especially when you consider graduate school.

In this case, I would go to your safeties or a state school so you can save money for graduate school or other studies. Seriously since Bush's latest cuts in education, a 160,000-200,000 dollar loan over 4 years of college with INTEREST rates is pretty damn high.

My honest advice is to go to your safeties and save your money and get a high GPA rather than applying to backdoors like Cornell ecology and/or paying massive amounts of money.

Think about this: How are you going to pay for Med School? I doubt that Cornell ecology major is gonna pay off your huge loans and afford you a med school. You might be 40 years old before you can afford just the loans for Med school.

well the heop program at cornell offers a full ride to the school. Its specifically for students who are disadvantaged and cannot afford to pay for college. It is also for those who have had to work in order to support their family, etc. I have had to do all of this, hence I applied to that. I have taken 2 jobs this yr, and have mentioned that in my essay and an additional letter.

also, ye I will prbably go to my safety schol since it will be less expensive and will be easier to pay off loans.

bumppppppppp

hey I was just waitlisted at BC. Im dissappointed but I do realize that my test scores and gpa were low. Im just upset that now I wont have a shot at any of my reaches as I was wl at bc

Don't give up hope. I just read a thread where a guy got GSPed at NYU and got into JHU. With all the weird stuff that's been happening so far, maybe you will get into one of your reaches.

i seriously thought I had a good shot of getting in. Could it be because I didnt show any interest?

BC accepts 33% of the applicants, so if you got waitlisted there, the only other school you have a very good chance of getting into is BU (they accept 60%). Have you visited Boston yet? That would be a good idea... being waitlisted still means you have a chance so don't be overwhelmed. Send an interest letter, visit the school, attend a class and meet with an admissions person... that's the best advice I can give you.

im really dissappointed as I didnt really put enough effort and time in my bc app. Does this basically mean im screwed for my other colleges?

id say you are rejected from everywhere except bu. if you got into nyu, you would now it by now. they are sending letters for receptions, scholarships to a ton of people.

all the other ones are ridiculous. your gpa and sat arent high at all. better get ready for one of those safeties
