My final (pre-summer college visit) list....

I'm a junior at a medicore school (avg. SAT 1060) of about 2,800 students in georgia. I've finalized my list as of now and I was wondering what my chances were at each school. Also, I was wondering if my safety/match/reach assumptions were correct.

my basic stats are-

SAT: 1320 (660 each and it was my first time) retaking in june and aiming for a 2100 (750 Cr, 700 math and 650 writing)

ACT: 31 (all subsections 32+ except science) retaking in june aiming for a 33..the current avg. of English, reading and math..lol

SAT II's: taking in may...from the real's book I got an 800 in US history, a 720 in Math IIC and a 660 in physics

rank/gpa: 6/400 (should be 4 or 5 after this semester) 95.5/3.976 uw ?w

Classes: 3 gifted, 1 honors chorus and PE/health freshmen year 93 gpa
3 gifted, 1 AP (5 on world exam)german and chorus sophmore year 97 GPA
2 gifted, 2 AP, german II and chorus this year 98 GPA
4 AP (gov't and econ count as one), 1 honors (german III) and chorus next year.... probably about a 100 GPA..lol

EC's: VP-elect of NHS and 3 year member(including next year), Prez-elect of Mu Alpha Theta and 3 year member (ditto), Mock trial-attorney for two years, Student govt-VP of student body this year...hopefully president next, scholars bowl 4 years (no major awards) and Odyssey of the Mind for two years (1st in region 4th in state) my sophmore year

Fine Arts: Vocal Music freak- gonna be a 4-year all stater, selected as a finalist for governor's school in vocal music (only 12 men..6 basses make it from the state), 4 year honor choir nominee and lots of other programs and honor choirs

other: Volunteer at local coop (2 hours every two weeks...nm but better than nothing) and lots of church music/leadership stuff. Also... i know all of my recommendations are going to be amAzing!

prosepctive major: Gov't/political science and either international relations or political economy

schools: reach- Claremont McKenna, Brown, Georgetown
match- Washington and Lee U, GWU
safeties- Illinois Wesleyan, New College of Florida, Oxford College of Emory

aslo feel free to recommend any schools...
btw- I'm a URM...african american male

If you get the SAT/ACT scores your hoping for, I'd say aim higher! You have a lot going for you. (heck even if they don't you be in good shape at many places).

One that comes to mind is Pomona College, which is one of the Pomona schools. It will be a reach at this point, a match/slight reach w/ the SAT/ACT you are hoping for.

What high school do you go to?

my parents are trying to tell me to aim higher as well but the thing is....I really don't want to.....I visited duke and princeton and I got the impression that they were all rich, stuck-up prep school kids....I like brown and most of my others schools because they're so laid back and accepting yet known for their academic reputations...

You would be suprised how tolerant some of these "stuck-up prep school kids" really are...I would really ask you if you want that preconceived notion to be a determining factor in what college you choose to attend.

I go to Dacula High School.....and to pentasa...I'm not meaning to say that all the kids are stuck up and intolerant.....but I just didn't feel like a I felt welcome or at home at any of the "great" academic institutions I've visited....so really its not a preconcieved notion its from personal experience.
Also, I'm not applying what I saw at two schools to all top 10 schools...this summer I'm still visiting Yale and Harvard even though I doubt I'll be at all interested

but seriously...does anyone have any opinions on my list/chances?

like 50 views and only 5 replies....no1 loves me ~tear~...

The fact that you already say you "doubt [you] will be interested" shows that you do, in fact, have preconceived notions of the colleges. Going in with an attitude like that will only result in you pointing out every aspect you don't like. Go in with an open mind, and try to look at all sides of the college.

Nearly Golden at WnL, I'd say. I got in ED this year with stats really similar to yours (31 ACT, 3.97 GPA). It's an incredible school and if small LAC is your thing, definetely visit.

I have...it was aboslutely amAzing....out of the six colleges I visited over spring break (UNC-Chapel Hill, College of William and Mary, UVA, University of Richmond, Duke and WnL) it was by far the most impressive, both socially and academically. Lexington also exceeded my expectations...it's a pretty cool small town. The only thing is VMI scares me and its right next door...haha. Pentasa- I'm definately not well off, the fact that I'm having the opportunity to go up north to visit these schools is gonna force me to consider what I see..lol

...........bump

You're african american... my sister is AA and got into harvard with similar SAT score, just add a little to your EC and I think you could make it into HYPS

I was thinking the same thing totoboyo, but I'm afraid to be too psotive on here, esp. HYP.

But fut, go where you want to go...if you don't like the elite schools, don't let anyone tell you that's not OK. But hey, if you're interested, you have great shots.

lol, I thought my ec's were my best area.....what can I do o make those look better?

......bump
