Hey people, this is my first post on CC. I always check on the site and visit it frequently, but just recently registered.

Anyways, heres my question. Is there a major difference between Early Action and Early Decision??
Like does one let you keep applying to other schools, or are there any other discrepancies??

Early Decision is a binding contract. If you apply to a school ED and are accepted, then you must pull all the applications you've submitted at other schools.

Early Action is NOT a binding contract. You simply submit your application earlier and are notified earlier of your admissions status. If your not accepted in the EA pool, most schools will re-evalutate you with the regular applicant pool. Also, you can apply to more than one school EA as long as the school is not designated as a SINGLE CHOICE EARLY ACTION.

There are two types of EA, one is 'regular' and the other is 'single choice'

Regular: may apply to more than one school EA, non binding admissions agreement (aka, you do not have to go if accepted). Georgetown/MIT/UChicago

SC: you may apply early to only one school, no others. Yale/Harvard have this. if deferred/rejected, may apply regular decision as you wish

ED: you are legally bound to attend the school if accepted. you may only apply ED to one school (although you are permitted to apply to schools with rolling admissions, i believe). If admitted, you must withdraw all other apps. Princeton/Penn/Brown

Early Decision is a binding agreement between you & the school. If you are accepted, you must pull all your applications to other schools, and you're required to go to the one that accepted you ED. The contract is difficult to get out of, and I've heard that if you renege on an ED school, others won't accept you/let you attend. ED is a good choice if you know it's your dream school and don't have to worry about finances.

Early Action just means that your application will be examined before the Regular Decision applications are. You get your notification of acceptance/denial earlier, so you have time to apply to other schools if necessary. You usually also get a better shot at financial aid/scholarships. Some schools have Single Choice Early Action (SCEA), which means that you can only apply to that one school EA, but you can apply to as many as you want to RD.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it. Good thing I know now, instead of after (if) getting accepted to a school via one of those options, LOL
