I just completed my first quarter here at Cal Poly this Fall as a transfer student from the LA area Pasadena City College. I just thought about sharing my experience. The school is gorgeous, just as I have expected. SLO is a very environmentally friendly town. The weather is great, not so cold not so hot. Hottest days lasted a few days. I am studying at the Orfalea School of Business. To all perspective students considering business and or will be attending Spring 11, I really have to say, it is really a wonderful college and has really proven its prestige. Class size are small and academic advisors are there to assist with you at your convenience. Whenever I needed office hours, i had so much ease going to my professor. There are so so many business clubs to join. I joined the financial management association. there is a $45 per year fee for membership and much more benefits. Although you are still welcome if you don’t pay your dues. lots of networking and connections. every week on thursday, we meet and the club host a company (all of them are big firms). Apple’s CFO (Cal Poly Alumni) came to the school for a seminar to talk to us about his success. During club meetings, employers would discuss to us about their company and network with us and talk to us about all the opportunities they are currently offering and many of them accepted resumes and some even offered interviews the same day later in the day. I have a stack full of business cards from employers now, i don’t know where to start. hahaha. Many of the business clubs also give free pizza every meeting!!! Many of the others usually host an employer each week too. I also joined the real estate club too. Other clubs in club the national marketing association, Information Systems club, International business club, human resource club, accounting club, consulting club, etc…they serve a big advantage for the business students there and all students are welcomed to join any of the clubs regardless of your concentration in your Business Admin major or even other majors from different colleges. Many employers who come love Cal Poly students and recruit heavily. for all future accounting students out there, we got one of the top accounting department and has Ernst And Young designated office department in our school. during this quarter there was a big accounting firm day. over 30 accounting firms including all Big 4s came to talk and recruit. especially Ernst and Young and KPMG

We are designated as their target school. Many of my friends got job offers before graduating from them.
In terms of changing your major, it is difficult, but not impossible, you would need to maintain high GPA and fulfill the required class. however, if you are a Business major, you can change your concentration no problem. I personally changed from finance to real estate econ and now to Management information systems. there are so many business activites going on on campus and club fairs/ job fairs to attend even outside of club meetings, so that is another great thing I really love. the classes are rigorous and during orientation day, faculties have also stressed that a lot, so i really now know what they were telling us. The big reason why i decided to come to Cal Poly is really because of the networking and recruitments that is so great and also because of the Discere Faciendo moto (Learn by doing). Students are well prepared to take on job positions and are equipped with high caliber skill sets be ready on the job day one and employers know that having been able to talk to me on a personal level. Many of the business students come from many different places. anyways, i hope this will give you a first hand look at some of the stuff a current student is experiencing at the business school. Happy Holidays and Happy New years!!!

Really nice post! I am so glad to hear that you have had a great first quarter at CP in the Orfalea Business School. My son is in engineering, but we love to hear anything positive about the school he is attending. He is enjoying it as well!
Happy New Year!

Ditto on your fondness for Cal Poly! As an alumni, I can say that my years at Cal Poly was no doubt some of the best years of my life. Also, some of my closet friends and most respected professors and mentors all hailed from Cal Poly.

Although I subsequently went onto Harvard for my graduate studies, Cal Poly will always be my favorite and most beloved university.

Adesigner- Solid post, enjoyed reading it! It’s great to hear you are really passionate about your business department.

Btw… I read this a couple months ago, and it really impressed me.
