Yeah so my good friend just received a D+ (68%) grade in Physics… The thing is that he already has the requirement for science done because he took Chemistry last year, so he was just taking chemistry to enhance his secondary education. His major is Recreation and Tourism Management. What do you thinks gonna happen to him? and what advice should I give him?

Cal Poly freshman are conditionally admitted. One of the conditions of admission is this:

Your friend has a chance of having his admission rescinded. He needs to contact the Admissions Office to discuss what the next step should be.

DON’T contact Cal Poly until your friend has exhausted all possibilities of a grade change. Go to the teacher, beg, do extra credit, do what ever it takes to get the grade changed - and a C- will not work. It HAS to be a C! Explain to the teacher that the grade WILL keep him out of Cal Poly, there is no gray area on this. If the final transcript goes to CP with that grade, your friend will get a really nice apology letter telling him he is no longer accepted. Trust me, I have experience in this area…

hmmm … I was told by the admissions office that a ‘C-’ was OK for a freshman, but not for a transfer student, as long as your overall GPA was still close to what was reported on the application. I agree - try everything you can to get that grade bumped up…

What if the D is in P.E.? I had to take a semester of it for graduation requirements, and because of senior activities and the combination of the teacher being an ass, it’s possible that I might fall below 70%.

I have a friend who got a D in it but is going to Berkeley. So I would think that they really don’t care about P.E. At least I hope that’s the case.

i got in with 3 C-'s…

i think your friend might be fine. i had a friend who literally failed calc & ucsd didnt take her spot away. i dont know about poly though. they say things, but never really do anything yet/let it slide. but have your friend try to get it to a C- and your friend will be fine.

Contrary to what other people are saying, you need to tell your friend to contact Cal Poly IMMEDIATELY. They understand that Physics can be a difficult class. If he explains his circumstances, and see that he’s taking the initiative to contact them right away, then they probably won’t care.

Of course, if he’s using Physics as one of his a-g requirements, and he would otherwise not meet the requirements, then there’s a problem.

DC2o9: They don’t care about PE at all. Don’t worry about it. As long as you graduate high school, that’s what matters.

Ahh i’m in the same situation now i’m worried! i’m at a 70.9% in IB Math studies and I had to skip class because i knew i would fail the test that i was supposed to take! It sucks because i’m horrible at tests and they are worth 75% of the grade and homework is 25%, and i can’t let this get in the way of going to college…

I really don’t want to sound rude, but if you’re seriously struggle with tests and rely on homework for a grade, you might want to go to CC for awhile…college course grades are generally based upon the scores of a few tests and maybe a project.

Its not really tests, I’ve taken a lot of CC courses and I do fine in them, its just math in general…

sorry i meant math tests in general
