well my friend's been pretty laggy about writing a rec for my Yale application. This is probably the last week before the committee meets, and it's probably already been decided whether i'll make it to the committee.

Let's say if I DIDN'T make it to the committee - they're not gonna re-open my file and re-evaluate again even if Yale receives my friend's rec by end of this week, are they? Should I just ask my friend to save on the postage, forget about Yale and keep his peer rec for RD?

I think it's a very bad idea. Yale says that is strongly discourages supplemental materials, including supplemental recs. While I think supplemental recs help certain people, I think a peer rec will hurt you. If you were going to disregard Yale's statement about supplemental materials, it wouldn't be to include a peer rec, but something more important.

i see.... I did see Yale's policy, and when I called Yale the person said that peer recs are accepted. I thought about it, and I thought my friend's a great writer and it'd prob be a great rec. But then again I can't tell two Yale alums that they're wrong :P

I did send my official EC records/transcript issued by my HS, and part of that transcript includes an open "testimonial". Would Yale count that as a supplementary rec then?

Yale specifically asks only for compelling supplementary recs from people like coaches or music directors -- people with a professional standing to evaluate you.

Even if your friend is a great writer, who cares? What's the compelling CONTENT that's not included in your other two recs?

Your friend's rec would be worthless to Yale at best -- at worst, annoying and exactly what they ASK STUDENTS NOT TO DO.
