Hello! This is my first post~
Here it is ~ DGSpitzer - Digital Art Portfolio
I'm an international student who is very very interested in SCA - Interactive Media Division MFA and have submitted my application.

With strong passion about game development, I keep learning a lot of skills for game design by self-teaching since junior school...therefore, I can finish all parts of the game such as programming (AS3), painting and music composition (piano improvisation and digital music with FL Studio) by myself.

Actually, some of my games have had some achievement in China - first prizes in national competitions, dozens of fanarts and fanfictions, for example, my indie-game "Eddy Violet", available to play in the portfolio (Chinese version with options translated).

However, my English proficiency is poor (TOEFL score just 80+). Is it really a big problem during my application? D:

And is here any student in IMD currently? I wonder if my portfolio is fit for application because I have viewed one or two applicants’ portfolio for IMD in the past years which are so great and full of 3D works; but my games are almost 2D…

If you find any grammatical mistake in my portfolio, please tell me ASAP!

IMD student here. Your portfolio is exactly what they’re looking for. I’m not an international student, so I can’t say whether or not your English proficiency would be a significant factor in your application, but I wouldn’t stress out over it too much. It’s definitely not as important as the rest of your app.

Anyways, I’m obviously not an admissions rep and there’s no way for me to guarantee you anything, but from what I can see, I am almost entirely certain that you will make it into the program. The work you’ve done is incredible and leagues above what I did when I was admitted. PM me if you have any more questions about the program; I’d love to chat about your work in general as well.

Bad news, the admission office said that they will do not review my application material just if TOEFL score is under the requirement…
(but about the IMD, Mr.Sam Roberts have replied me it’s ok for applying)
What should I do? Arguing about that?
:(

Wow, I love your portfolio. It would be a shame if they were to not accept you especially considering the weight that USC puts on creativity and the quality of the portfolio. I’m not exactly sure how you should approach this situation, but contact as many people that work under the USC administration and try to get some more info on how you can still apply.

You could even contact the Dean (although I’m not sure if he would respond).

According to the office’s replies, it’s hopeless to get accepted (even one or two point below TOEFL score requirement has been rejected without reviewing their application, not to mention my poor score). :(

SCA is my dream school, but reapply one year after may be too long for me. There are many creative things I want to learn in this world, therefore I can’t stop my step to waiting. It’s my own fault to pay too much attention in my projects what led to my neglecting of English language skill practice. :(

Whatever the final desision, thanks for your support.

Hey, keep your head up bro. There are some other fine game programs in the U.S. Apply to those and maybe you can even transfer after a year of living in the U.S. and getting accustomed to the language.

yeah~ I have read one saying in this forum (by madbean?) about that, “your talent and abilities decide what program you’ll be admitted.” With confidence in my artworks, I’ll never give up.
Thanks again, @CygnusFiend~
:P

All the best! I am a Chinese applicant too(though I am attending another college in the U.S. now) and I just submitted my application to IMD today(I am transfer student).
I am really excited that another Chinese student is applying to this program. I am really into game design, too. SCA rarely accepts Chinese students. You have to be extremely talented to get in lol. Your portfolio seems really impressive to me, I wish you could really get in!:)

Oops I didn’t notice your later posts. It’s such a pity that they won’t let you in just because of your TOEFL score, but bear in mind, game design, which frequently involves teamwork, requires you to be able to communicate effectively with your team members and proficiency in language will also benefit your self-expression, so I think it is still important to master English, especially if you want to work at a large game company like EA or Ubisoft. Nevertheless don’t feel disheartened, your work is truly amazing. 相信金子在哪都会发光的~
