My grades rant

I think I have ruined my year. According to my grades, I have a 97% in Honors Chemistry, a 99% in Pre-Veterinary small animal, a 73% in Algebra II, and a 77% in Honors English 10. I know I've made many comments about how getting C's aren't the end of the world, but this is just unacceptable. I have a 77% in English because English because I've two C's on quizzes. I have a 73% in Algebra II because... it's math and I suck at it. I had a lot on my plate this year, EC wise and it's just awful. I mean, come on, getting a C in English is really embarrassing, and at this rate, I can kiss John Hopkins, Virginia Tech, and Hood College goodbye. Last semester in Biology, these girls and always say how Algebra II is easy, and how they had a 96 and 98 in that class and things like that. Me, dumb enough agreed with them and expected it to be easy. Boy I was wrong. I know many users here have no problem with Algebra II, but I do. When I took AB Physics freshman year it was also difficult, but I didn't struggle as much as I do now. Algebra II by far is the hardest class I've taking so far. Algebra is just weird, it feels like all of it is made up crap. In the eighth grade I got a B in Algebra I :( I love math. It's weird to say, but I strangely do. I love learning new concepts but my brain doesn't follow through. I've talked with my Algebra II teacher and he just sugar-coated everything:

Teacher: "How did ya do on the quiz!"
Me: "I know I failed it."
Teacher: "Oh no you didn't! We'll see on Monday"
Me: "I'm pretty sure I did, I failed most of the quizzes o.o...."

Then he started laughing, and I left. I hope I can do better, I always try but it looks like "trying" isn't good enough. If this continues, I plan to quit F.F.A, piano, and choir and cancel my veterinary internship.

Does your school have tutoring sessions? Find help.

Yes, definitely talk to your teacher about after school help.

I’m with you bro. I have an 87% in Algebra II at the moment, but we just took a test and we’ll be going into Trigonometry soon so I’m really worried about it going down to a C. It is definitely the hardest math I’ve encountered so far and, like you said, most of it just doesn’t make sense! The thing I don’t understand is how you have a 97% in Honors Chemistry. Chemistry for me is even harder than Algebra II and I actually have a 76% in that class. Hopefully you’re not feeling stupid because Chemistry is a ridiculously hard subject for most people and a 97% is extremely impressive!

I’m kinda the opposite, I have like a 102 in Algebra II, but I have a B- in English. I kid you not, not a single person in the school has an A in my English teacher’s class, and no one’s gotten an A as long as anyone can remember!

It can be frustrating, but just remember - it’s not the end of the year yet. I’m going to ask my English teacher for as many extra credit opportunities as possible, and am going to study my butt off for every quiz or test coming up, lol.

@HobbitTom & @Bassoonapus I wish I could ask for help, I can’t really stay after school because of F.F.A, choir and piano.

@Divad17 Thanks by the way. In Algebra II right now, were learning about Rational Zeros, which is like crazy hard. I hate saying this but, Chemistry is really easy to me except for the pop labs where the teacher gives us a prompt and a list of materials, and we have to do the labs ourselves.

@Rob1995 I plan to work my tail off for every quiz and test too. I still have 7 more weeks.

Grades are more important than your extracurricular activities, especially when your grades are not where you want them to be.

I’d hold off on cancelling the internship if you can. That is a good opportunity that may not come along again easily. Ask the teacher specifically for help, don’t just hint at it. Saying you don’t think you did well on the quiz may seem like you are looking for reassurance. Be sure to let the teacher know you want and are available to stay late, come early for help. I hope you are able to turn things around. Don’t be too discouraged.

Algebra II is probably the math class I’ve done the worst in, actually. Even more so than pre-calc and calculus AB. Maybe it was because I was a freshman and I slacked, but still.
Granted, I’m not going to lie, I still did well, but I definitely struggled at times. I remember getting a D on a test at the beginning of a marking period, so my grade for the marking period was a D. -_-

73% in Algebra II? It’s easy as hell.

I have a D in English 3rd quarter. The class will be so relaxed after the test that I’ll still have a C or even a B for the semester, so I don’t really care. Senioritis FTW.

@HobbitTom Thanks, I actually canceled my piano practice to study for Algebra II. My instructor was a little angry, but I need the time.

@shoboemom Yeah your right, I worked hard for that position. Also I’m trying to stay after tomorrow, I just hope his arrogant Sophomore assistant isn’t there. My math teacher said that his assistant got an A on every test, and he’s in Calculus now :S

@FastNeutrino Wow, there are a few freshman in my class, and they understand everything lol.

Are there any specific topics in A2 that give you difficulty, or it’s just the subject overall?

Yeah I know how you feel. I’m in Algebra II as a freshman, and while I love math and have a 98, I tend to struggle with graphing and missed a lot because of my concussion. If I were you, I’d ask your teacher if there’re any online resources that could help you. Or you could ask for help on specific concepts, that way you can focus on what gives you the most trouble.

@lldm21 It’s really the subject in general. Some stuff I understand but not fully. I read my book and do extra problems here and there, but that’s not really helping me that much. My math teacher makes his own problems and sometimes take problems from the back of the book for test and quizzes

@damnf3 Wow a 98! I could never get a 98 in that class lol. I;m starting to ask frequently now, and my teacher knows that I’m not good in that class so he comes by my seat often and offers help.

Another thing to note is that, since algebra II, I don’t think I’ve ever used imaginary numbers. Maybe at the very beginning of pre-calculus, but other than that, you just avoid them. Not sure if this changes post-Calc AB, but still. Same thing with matrices, really, but I know they come back in full force at linear algebra. I found matrices to actually be fairly difficult actually, because we weren’t allowed to use our calculators and I couldn’t remember which one you had to flip to multiply them and all.
But if you need help in the class, please, feel free to ask. I still managed an A, but it was a close call. =P
