i think the best hook that i have is that i wrote three books that did relatively well. my gpa is not bad either 3.92 on a 4.0 scale and 4.41 W, but the thing is my test scores are a bit low, i'll be retaking them but.... stuff might happen. i just want to know how i can use my hook to the best of my advantage and just by how much will something like my hook hide the test scores, if that is even possible. so far my SAT 1 is 1930. i'm trying to shoot for rather good colleges, applying ED to Cornell and also to UCB and UCLA. i'm in state. thanks everyone!

books published nationally...?

If they are published nationally...wow. That's really awesome.

Out of curiosity, how did you do on the writing/english parts of the SAT and ACT?

I ask odd questions, I know.

actually internationally

Dang, what are they about?

thanks man, umm 640V 650M 640W and the first one is poetry in english and chinese done by me. the second i translated teh works of a pretty well known poet in China. and teh third is essays. they've won recognition in CHina i got interviewed and stuff by newspaper and magazines. huge reader base--it's China -_-. yeah and i'm fairly sure one of the books is used as textbook material for a certain rural village which...needs educational materials.... soo yeah. some more advice would be greatly appreciated. my class load is the most challenging classes. it would suck major arse if everything i did was destroyed by bad test scores... thanks again!!

saladrax350, congratulations ! that sounds like a very proud accomplishment (well, it is). i think it's a great hook. i don't know your situation, but is the reason some of your test scores are low, is because perhaps you spent a lot of your time on your books? I don't know if this is the case, and if it is, maybe you can explain on your apps why your test scores are the way they are. in any case, use the fact about your published books to your advantage, incorporating the fact that your books have "touched the lives of countless of readers in China " (maybe it shouldn't sound that corny, but you get the idea). good luck and believe in yourself !!

publishing books >>>> 2400 SAT Score

First of all...that sounds great! Congrats on the publications.
The UC's are state schools...they probably don't care about the EC's or "hooks" as much as the private universities. I'd say your published works would be more important in admissions say at Cornell than the UCs.

Anyway, good luck.

thanks a lot everyone, hmm well i hope for the best...
haha i actually prefer staying in state for school, you gotta love the California sun.. sucks to hear that the UCs don't really care about such things...-_- thanks still everyone
and also...i guess you can infer that i'm asian. being both asian and low test scores, will that hurt me even more? haha

well, is chinese your first language...are you from there, cause that might explain your verbal and writing scores, in which case they don't care that much about those...although if you're pretty much american, well then yeah, it might hurt you at cornell, but the ucs don't care about race either...im not sure they even ask, but yeah, they don't use aa.

um, the name of the books? A 1930 is a pretty crappy score for good colleges. Sorry, ivy league colleges are a big reach for you

I was thinking exactly what Peugeot is asking about. If you haven't been here all that long I really don't see how they could hold the writing against you. I mean, you have published three books for goodness sake.

meh what can i say? i can only take it again and hope for the best. actually i was born here so.... crap >_<. i just had a bad test day i guess... My GPA is not that bad i have about 8 APs under my belt(only one B). it just pains me that all that i have done may become undone because of these aptitude tests argh!!!!

Do UC's weigh more heavily on GPA and course load? thanks again

Publishing articles in newspapers/magazines = awesome
Publishing a book = holy crap wow
Publishing 3 books in 2 languages that did well > 2400 on SAT

I think that colleges overlook low scores only in very unusual cases, and that your's may kust be one of those. They are looking for people who will do well in life, and publishing 3 books indicates you are already a successful writer.

if that is the case i will thank god... i'll just retake all my tests in the fall. hmmm, is it true that applying EA or ED will lower the chances for financial aid? i really dislike these tests...it's mostly the anxiety that does me in

I know it sounds goofy as mess, but this always worked for me before stressful auditions and stuff.

"There are two pressure points on your wrist which, when firm pressure is applied, can help you return to a calmer state. Apply firm (not hard) pressure with a straight forefinger as you breathe out. Release the pressure as you inhale. Repeat the process several times.

Pressure Point #1: in the center of your inside wrist, in a straight line up from your middle finger, about two thumb widths from the bottom of your palm. Youll find a natural groove, just behind your wrist bone.

Pressure Point #2: on the outside wrist, centered on your middle finger, about two thumb widths above the crease in your wrist. Youll feel the slight indentation."

Don't laugh...it works. Between the pressure points and focusing on the breathing and mess, it really takes my mind off of whatever I'm stressed about.

haha, thanks for the tip. i'll try it. i do well on practice tests i just don't understand why i flopped on the actual thing. i really do hope that i'm a special case and being asian hopefully won't count against me. stupid AA...-_-
