My HS has a weird AP Calc course

From my research on the internet, I learned that AP Calc BC covers AP Calc AB in the first semester, so it's useless to take both concurrently. (I think I saw someone say that it's even impossible to take the two together.)

But in my HS, there's a class called AP Calc AB/BC and my counselor said that it's a class that does both. It takes up two class periods, one for AB and one for BC.

Are there any schools that have this course? I'm really confused and if BC covers AB already, i don't see the reason why I should take it, but what do you guys think? should I take it or is it a waste of time?

At my school, AP Calculus AB is a one-year course and AP Calculus BC is also a one-year course. The way our teacher does it is learn all of AB in year 1 (which in our book is chapters 1-7), and touch a bit of BC after the AP test, then all of BC in year 2 (which is chapters 7-10). We’re really well-prepared for the exams, because the last two months or so before the AP tests are a lot of review and not as much new content.

I think when you say Calc BC cover AP Calc AB, from my experience, it just means you need to have all the concepts of AB (derivatives, integrals, etc.) mastered in order to apply them in BC.

I don’t know if I’ve helped you or confused you more, but I think the answer to your problems is just to talk to the Calc teacher and ask what each one covers and what you should do.

At my school, you can take either AP Calc AB or AP Calc BC. BC is AB plus a bit more. Therefore, it’s essentially the same course, but at a faster pace, and therefore with more material.

^Exactly the same as at my school.

Is that the only Calculus class your school has? If it has that, AB, and BC, then it might be strange. But if it has AB and that class - that AB/BC class may just function as a BC class.

My school’s on block scheduling, and some students take the AP Calc AB exam, while others take the AP Calc BC exam. The AP Calc AB course is only one semester long and is offered both 1st and 2nd semester. Those who want to take the AP Calc BC exam take AP Calc AB 1st semester and AP Calc BC 2nd semester; a different teacher teaches Calc AB to those of us preparing for the BC exam, and we typically go at a slightly faster pace than the other AP Calc AB classes (designed for kids who are only taking the Calc AB exam). I’m in Calc BC right now, and basically, last semester, we got through the Calc AB curriculum while throwing in a few BC topics here and there. Additional BC topics are taught 2nd semester, with a lot of time devoted to review for the AP exam.
