my impressions of uchicago after visiting: negative

I was finally able to visit the U of C on Thursday, and I stayed in Shoreland (so far so good). However, when I went to my room, I discovered that my assigned host wasn't there. Thankfully, his roommate offered to look after me. When I woke up today, Friday, my actual host was still not there and I never saw him during my stay. Unfortunately, my "adopted" host didn't go to bed at all that night (who knows where he went), and he brought back some drunk friends who were there when I woke up around 6:00 AM. At about that time, one wanted to crash on the couch I was sleeping on and called me a "little four letter word" for staying in the room. I don't understand why someone too irresponsible to show up would bother hosting prospies when it would obviously hurt their impression of the school. Also, the sole activity going on in the dorms was drinking (I didn't know the weekend started on Thursday now). Not everyone drinks, and it would have been nice if there were some hall activities such as movies, for instance. The way I was treated by my non-existent host showed that he didn't care about me or the other prospie, and I am definitely leaning towards Cornell after this (to be fair, my "adopted" host was a nice person otherwise and took me to dinner). I really can't say how disappointing this was overall.

The class I sat in on, Greek Lit, was interesting though, and I also enjoyed the string quartet and Occam's Razor (improv comedy crew). Hurrah.

um, maybe you meant to post to the old thread instead of starting a new one?

for the record, i had a blast at chicago during my visit this week.

Ha, what floor of the Shoreland? I was just there too on the 6th floor. Ahh, and I too will go the way of Cornell. And yes, the people were not my type, although I did find many people who were incredibly nice and fun. Overall, I would be happy at UChicago (maybe) but ecstatic at Cornell. Hope to see you there!

twink1etwinkle: Actually, I thought my experience was unbelievable enough to warrant its own thread. I'm glad that you had a good time, though, and I'm honestly happy for you.

jerew: I was on the fourth floor, Bishop House. I hope to see you at Cornell too. I'm Austin from MA, so be on the lookout for me :)

i was just checking after you titled the thread with the exact same words as an already existing thread. i'm sorry that your host (or lack thereof) was so rotten, but i wish you the best at cornell!

ElectronicError, what is your major/college at Cornell.

I too just came back from my overnight visit and also, had a negative impression.
Don't get me wrong, the campus was awesome as were the facilities and almost everyone was very friendly (staff, students, faculty, etc).

Had a similar poor experience with host, he went to a frat party, got locked out of the room, had to sit in the lounge until 2:30am or something.

The classes were disappointing. I went to a chinese for heritage learners, economic analysis and SOSC core classes. It was as if the teacher was pulling teeth from each student, in each class, especially the SOSC core class, which I think I followed better than the students, even though I had never read the material.

So I will be attending CMU:Tepper next year.

Ah...I am sorry for those of you who had a flaky host. But I wouldn't base my judgement on just one kid, though. My host had a midterm so I just went out with the other prospies on the floor and it was still a good time. And about the classes; I went to a beginner's French class and the students were also pretty much non-response. But despite that I could tell the professor was really good, and during practice dialogues the kids opened up and were friendly. My one regret is that I wasn't able to sit in on more advanced classes, because I have heard that there is truly something different.

Anyway, sorry your overnight sucked, have fun at Tepper (where is that, btw?)!

my host and i parted ways sometime in the evening and went to different parties, mostly because i wanted to get a feel for the debate team and they were having a private party off campus. when i got back to the dorm, she wasn't back yet, so i just crashed in the room of one of the debate guys. lol, everything turned out fine and i just went up to her room in the morning.

jerew: Arts and Sciences, Biochemistry. You?
