Chandlerbing, I think you have been pushed a little hard
if the interview was formal, then you were kinda hit hard. If he said that, then he meant it. I am able to tell from little expressions on the face and general body language if someone is lying to me, or does not approve of me. If you have that to, then you should be able to tell if he was lying or not.

To the OP, I think you made a great impression. Buying a book and mailing it = some joules of energy + concern for a person + knowledge that the person will read and use the book + all the good stuff you can think of. You are good.
The interview is a MAJOR PART OF YOUR APPLICATION. It is the difference between a nerd on paper, and a smart and sociable person. It is the difference between someone who speaks like a scholar, and one who looks like a scholar on paper.

Yeah, bluewhitebulldog is completely right.

I seriously don't understand it when people say that the interview doesn't count for anything. Colleges always say that they admit a much higher percentage of people who had interviews than people who chose not to interview.

I strongly feel that while my interview wasn't the determining factor of my admission, it DEFINITELY helped a lot. My interviewer and I completely "clicked," especially over the whole engineering/hard science in an Ivy League issue (how people always think that Yale is for the social sciences and humanities, as opposed to engineering and such) because her three kids all majored in hard sciences at Yale.

The interview is really important, and a great interview is EXTREMELY helpful. When you're competing against thousands of kids who all have perfect grades, scores, and ECs, anything to distinguish you from the crowd is a major plus.

I hardly find your argument that I "asked if receiving a B- in a class would get my offer rescinded" analogous to people who ask if a 790 is going to make Yale automatically reject them.

Most people would agree that a C on a Midyear Report is cause for Yale to start asking some questions. A B- is pretty close to a C. At least I had a valid concern.

But anyway... yeah. I'm sorry I even commented too. Let's just call this done.
