I guess I have an ambiguous first name, which I realized when an alumnus interviewer emailed me addressing me as “Mr…” I ignored it the first time, hoping he would catch his mistake, but nope, “Mr” again.
So can anyone come up with a polite, preferably unawkward way of letting him know I’m actually a girl? Or should I just give him a nice surprise when we meet… :-S
If your first name is ambiguous don’t blame the interviewer. Send a polite email saying that you are a woman. Do not say you are a “girl”.
Personally I never thought of it as ambiguous, so this came as quite a surprise. Do you have any tips on how I might go about correcting him politely?
Heh, I had a very similar situation just last week which turned out to require more “corrective” action.
As TomSrOfBoston said, politely say that you are female, without blaming the interviewer.
Send a polite email and include a pic of yourself.
Dear Mr. X,
I just noticed the salutation in your email addressed me as a male. So you are not surprised when we meet, I just want to let you know I am female.
I look forward to meeting you on (X date) and I hope your week is off to a great start.
Best wishes,
(your name)
Better to clear things ahead of time rather than catching off guard. I don’t see the need for a photo. Keep it short and sweet.
I like @doschicos’s advice. I urge you to follow it exactly.
Thank you all for the advice, especially @doschicos for the upfront yet polite way you were able to put it. The interviewer replied, and everything has been sorted out!
What did he say?
