My List

Alright guys,
So it has finally come time for me to start narrowing down my list and getting to business. I have a meeting with my guidance councler on monday (which I might add I've never even met) and I'm supposed to be prepared to tell him where I'll be applying. Everyone in this forum has been a HUGE help to me and I appreciate all that has been done to help me.
Here is the list of colleges I'm planning on applying to:

Top of the list: Happy at these schools
UVA - telling him this is the school I want to go to. If I get in I will attend
Georgetown - amazing campus and really liked the vibe / good basketball
UNC - pretty nice campus / southern / great sports
University of Michigan - kinda big but loved the buisness school

Middle schools: Mehh, kind of a fail but not really
Boston College - I go to a jesuit highschool and 25+ people go here a year
USC - I don't know, jsut like it

Low schools (almost definites because I'm instate): High School was a waste
University of Florida - prepaid college here
Florida State University - prepaid college here

Randoms: I'm just applying here to see if any somehow give me a full ride
Upenn
Uchicago
Unorthwestern
John's hopkins
Rice
Emory
Duke - I didn't like it but meh.

What do you guys think about this list of schools. I've visited a couple of them and would be happy at most. I'm sure that I don't want to have to transfer but that may happen if I go to UF or FSU.

Also, I studied a lot this summer for the ACT and I'm expecting a 32. However, if I get a 30+ on science I'm really feeling a 33.

Thanks again for your help guys, you don't know how much you've helped me

As someone who was in your position just a year ago, I really think you should try to cut your list down even further. I applied to eight schools, which was a considerable drain on my time and money. I cannot even imaging applying to double that amount, as you are thinking of doing! Why bother applying to schools you don’t particularly care about (Duke)? If I were you, I’d try to eliminate at least a few schools from your randoms list. Your stress level and your wallet (or your parents’) will thank you!

You are of course free to do as you wish, but that’s just my two cents.

And good luck! :)

I appreciate your two cents skip. Well I’m applying to 5 schools early (Unc, Umich, Uchicago, Georgetown, USC) if I get into any one of these schools I’m only applying to UVA regular decision.

Georgetown all the way!!! It provides the best of all worlds–great school spirit and strong community without the segregation that occurs socially due to a Greek system, fantastic location (college town atmosphere of Georgetown and all that DC has to offer) that contributes to your academic/social/cultural experience, undergraduate emphasis (not graduate students) with professors teaching all of your classes and having their focus on undergraduates, resources of a major university but a feel of a smaller college, phenomenal alumni network, superior job placement and grad/prof school placement than the other schools you’ve mentioned.
Go Hoyas!!!

Hoyasaxa, I’m a die hard UVA fan ;o. Although, georgetown is my second choice because of the beautiful campus and area.

UVAorBust, just in case you don’t know (since I didn’t see UF on your list as an early application school) the University of Florida’s preferred application deadline is Nov 1st. Even though you aren’t excited about applying there you really want to apply before Nov 1st because that is the deadline required for anyone who wants to apply for the honors program. And, the honors program application must be sent in by March 1st so you would have to send that in before you hear back from UVA on April 1st. You can keep your eyes on UVA, just make sure plan B is in order :)

lol, UF is plan Z. But I honestly would LOVE to get into 1 school early then just have to apply to UVA. I’m pretty confident about UF but I do know that that school can be very hard to get into. Anyways, my new councilors daughter goes to UVA. UHHHHHH, tempting me so so bad. Hope she knows some secrets :).

A)

LOL YOU WISH. It’s an honor just to be accepted to most of them xD
I would cut out all but one or two from that list, you don’t want to overload yourself on apps, trust me.
B) I’m not that familiar, but does UVA not have an early option? Because its your top pick, yet you’re not doing early… whereas you are for like 5 other schools.
C) Good luck!

UVA does not have EA, they have it starting next year :(. Also, I know any kind of ride from any college is very very very unlikley but so is winning the lotery. It happens. If I get into UNC/Georgetown/Umich then during the regular decision I’m must going to apply to UVA. I mean maybe I’lll apply to some of the other schools but I just want to get inot a school early so I can concentrate on my UVA app.

FYI – UNC’s decisions for it’s “First Deadline,” i.e., EA, do not come out until mid-to late January, so you will not hear from UNC before UVa’s deadline.

Well it dosen’t really matter because I know I’m applying to UVA. I mean if I get into UNC I’m extremely happy but UVA is the goal.

UVA is the top of my list too. I’d narrow it down to around 5-6 schools. I’m doing:

1.UVA ( I get in, and same as you, i’m going)
2.Vtech (backup school)
3. VCU Promised medical (i’d love to bypass that MCAT)
4. UChicago----they sent me SOOO much mail, might as well apply
5. McGill University in Montreal, best medical school in canada.
6. Last slot if a fight between UPenn, Johns, and Harvard (this slot is a wish slot)

what are you planning on doing in your future?

Really? I got a TON of mail from Uchicago also. I mean I get a postcard/email almost every day. Also why fight between a last slot? Just apply to all three? Also in my future I definitly want to go international and work in some kind of business (perferably real estate or distrested companis).

They do that to give people a false sense that they’re going to get in to the school, in order to increase application numbers (see the article where they had a 44% increase in applications this past year) to artificially decrease their acceptance rate and thus increase their national ranking. It’s a ******** system and 90% of the people applying there wouldn’t even like the school. Don’t waste your money, you would have a LOT better time at either UPenn of Harvard or Johns Hopkins

Ohh I know it. My best friend’s brother went to Uchicago and he says the school is insanley cut throat which is the opposite of what I’m looking for. Upenn would be nice but it’s in such a bad neighbor-hood and not really in line with the southern setting that I like.

Re: UPenn…also highly competitive, particularly in their business school. I have to laugh a bit when you say that Penn is in such a “bad” neighborhood (It’s such a relative term!). Obviously, you’ve never been to Temple or University of Maryland-Baltimore Campus. ;)

Lol, Wahoo, right now I go to a school in the heart of an area I don’t want to be in. Some of the campus is surrounded by barbwire fence and it is not advised to park outside of the campus because your car will be robbed… I just am looking foward greatly to a nice, spread out, green campus. I mean warm weather willl just feel unreal.

Now now wahoogirl, we can’t forget UorB is simply focused on going to a “pretty” school with “great academics”. Guess he’s obviously missed all the news on the crap that goes on at UVa…

Dude, cut down your list, your parents are going to go broke over all of them and you’re not going to do well on a single application.

I agree with Shoe- cut the list. Don’t apply to places that you won’t realistically consider attending, “just to see if you get a full ride”. It’s just a waste of everyone’s time.

Think of it in terms of UVA…plenty claim they apply to UVA “just to see” or just to add another college to their list, and if they turn out to get admitted, they may bump someone who really wants to go, but is slightly less qualified to the wait list or the rejection pile. While they ultimately may not go, they may be contributing to putting someone else (possibly yourself) through the wringer while waiting to find out.

Our campus is fine. I’ve never heard of any of my classmates getting kidnapped and killed after a concert.
