Hmm, good points all. I think I’m going to put my most effort into my UNC and Georgetown app for EA. I’ll apply to those two and if I get into either I’m just going to apply to UVA. You guys are right, if I apply to other schools just to see I could be taking someone elses spot who feels like the school is their dream school. That would be a jerk move.

And three schools is just as dumb. Isn’t there any medium in your eyes?? While I agree with the “don’t apply to schools your definitely won’t go to and possibly steal a spot”, here’s two more things: a) you need to apply to more than three schools and you need to apply to safe schools that while you don’t love, you can stand going there and b) sometimes you gotta be a jerk in this world to get somewhere, just don’t make a habit of it, because then you’re just a d-bag

Burn. That’s like saying I’ve never heard of 32 of my peers being shot. Stuff like that isn’t University-related though, nor is it a norm…and she wasn’t a classmate. I was more referencing the various robberies we’ve experience recently near or on Grounds. And, as much as I don’t want to drag Yeardley’s name into anything, student-on-student violence while low, does happen, and UVa needs to start addressing these issues.

Shoebox, you should change your name to “soapbox”. Just kidding :). But anyways, I don’t really need to apply to more than 3 schools if I get into 1 early action. The schools I’m applying early action are all my second choices. If I get into 1 early action I’m only applying to my first choice, UVA.

^That makes sense. You can apply to less schools RD if you already got into your “top” second choice. Consider applying to a financial safety though, you never know what might happen (parent might lose a job for instance; knock on wood…)

Yeah yeah you can laugh at the advice. If you can’t take it, you shouldn’t be posting 24/7 asking everyone’s opinion

Wow shoebox, chill, I was just kidding (hence where I say just kidding and include a smiley face). I really appreciate your advice, you don’t need to get mad over it.
Also, guys, is ranked 18 out of 230 good?

OK, just a word of advice, do not not apply to a school because you feel like you might bump someone else off. This is your life, and your future, I say screw the other guys cause trust me, they won’t care. Even if you have a slight inclination to a school, you can afford it, you have the time, and you are willing to put forth the effort, then apply. Who cares if you get in and decide to go to another school, its the other guys fault for not being as good as you. Sorry for the rant but these types of great human kindness ideals annoy me sometimes. The world is not as rosy as we would like to imagine, if you want something you have to go out and take it.

@UVA… your rank is top 10%, but not top 5%. This is fairly good. It should do (quie well) for most applications!

@Euroazn, yea tbh our school dosen’t rank. But the top 30 kids got sent an email in order to join this tv show challenge thing. The list of the people the email was sent to is the order of the ranking :). I’m pretty happy with 18th, I mean if I dropped latin instead of taking 2 languages I would be much much higher but meh, 2 languages > a couple of spots in the rankings.

WikiMan- I completely understand your argument - however - UVAorBust does not always take to the reasonable advice that he requests from this board, so I merely tried to present a different argument to him at a more self-interested level to him.

And honestly, to apply to half a dozen schools “just to see” really serves no purpose other than to achieve some kind of validation as being somehow “special” (which could very well backfire). It is a waste of time for your counselors/teachers/yourself in terms of completing essays/money for your parents in app. fees and sending SAT scores.

Wahoogrl, the average number of schools people apply to at my school is 8-10, I mean 12 isn’t really overdoing it? Anyways I’m only applying to 3-4 eraly and if I get into 1 I’m probalby only going to apply to UVA.

The average in reality is probably more like 5-6
But applying 3-4 early + 1 = 5 and that is absolutely reasonable.

Euro, that is if I get in to one of those schools early ;o
