My List

I should have done this a long time ago. I have no idea why I waited so long, but I am still finalizing my application list. I'm a senior in 7 AP classes this year. Took 4 last year.
APs:
Calc AB, Calc BC, European History, Government, United States History, Environmental Science, Psychology, Human Geography, Language, Literature, Music Theory

Sooo:

UNC-Chapel Hill (Match)
Tulane (Match)
Williams (Reach)
Princeton (Reach)
Cornell (Reach)
Clark U (Safety?)
Dickinson College (Low Match/Safety?)
William and Mary (Low Reach)

Is this too many schools? Any suggestions?
Basic Info:
4.0 UW
4.8 W
11/450
1470/2230 SAT (taking one last time in Nov.)
Average/Decent ECs/Leadership/Comm Service
Recs: Should be amazing
Essays: I'm a good writer...if I make myself do them, they should be an asset.

I might even add one more in-between high match type school because you have two Ivies and the #1 LAC that are super hard to get, so unless you really love William and Mary maybe add another LAC a little less selective than Williams. Davidson, Colby, Colgate, Hamilton or maybe one more university slightly less selective than Cornell----something like Emory maybe?

Make sure you apply for the Dean’s Honor Scholarship (DHS) at Tulane. You are a good candidate (merit based), and it is for full tuition all 4 years. It does require an additional application though, and it is due the middle of December. Hopefully you applied to Tulane EA.

As far as your question, definitely not too many schools. It is a good list. I am assuming that finances are not an issue, since you don’t mention it. If they are, you need a financial safety in there, which could be your state school or could be a school with guaranteed merit money based on stats.

Are you in-state for UNC-CH?

Can you afford your safety school?

Do you know how much your parents will pay each year? If you don’t, then ask.

If money is an issue, then you need a couple of financial safety schools. Those are schools that you know that you’ll get accepted to and you KNOW that you’ll get enough funding (from ASSURED scholarships, ASSURED grants, and family funds)

Your overall SAT is high, but that’s mostly because of your 800 on the Writing. Many schools don’t really count the Writing section for much.

For instance…Cornell (which doesn’t bother reporting the Writing section)…your 1470 puts you below the top 25%. What is your SAT breakdown?

Test Scores Middle 50% of First-Year Students

SAT Critical Reading: 630 - 730
SAT Math: 660 - 770
SAT Writing: - -
ACT Composite: 29 - 33

I agree with Hitch. Take a look at Davidson for a slightly less selective, but still academically demanding LAC. And look at Elon as a possible safety. (This is based on what seems to be a slight preference for southern schools).
