Two years ago my father was in an accident at work and passed away. He was the one who worked while my mom stayed at home. My mom hired a lawyer and they won a court case where my mom gets workers compensation as help. It’s not taxable so my mom cannot do taxes but for FAFSA requires you to get tax to get financial aid. What am I suppose to do since she has technically no income besides workers compensation and she can’t do taxes?
If your mom is not required to file taxes…you get a non-filers statement…and complete that.
Are YOU a U.S. citizen? If so, you complete the FAFSA…and in the oarwnt incime section, you put $0.
You should expect to be verified…because no question…the colleges are going to wonder how you pay your bills.
I am a U.S citizen and I did fill out fafsa but I wasn’t sure what to do about my mom not filing her taxes. Could she go to anyone that does taxes and request that form?
I believe the non-filers statements are on the college websites…and need to be submitted to the colleges…all of them.
Does this mom’s status as an illegal resident affect this non-filer status?
I don’t know about that. It is an uncommon situation. I agree that the OP’s best plan is simply to file the FAFSA indicating that there is no taxable income, and then expect to be verified.
The best thing you can do is call the FAFSA people and ask. They are very helpful. You don’t have to use your actual name. Sounds like the nonfile status has nothing to do with your mom’s resident status. They are not going to come after her or anything like that. Your mom has done nothing wrong in not filing. So just call and ask about it.
