My mom just found out that alcohol is allowed in college dorms....what do I do?

She thinks that now I'll be at the hands of drunk people who can act unpredictably and possibly threaten my safety..

Is that the truth?

Lol. really.

hahaha yeah, indian parents…whaddya expect?

I dont know what to say that can calm her down!

every college in the united states has alcohol

maybe not byu

that’s what I said. But do you know anything about safety policies or sommmeething?

the rice students are not drunks? its not even that wet of a campus

alright. I’ll see if my mom takes it

Rice is a wet campus, but overall I think the drinking is pretty safe. While you’ll certainly see a lot of underage drinking, we make sure to emphasize the importance of responsible drinking to incoming students. One important factor to note is that we have a student-run EMS who students call in the event that someone drinks too much. Students who call EMS do not have to worry about getting in trouble with the campus police, so there is never any fear of calling for help when a friend needs it. Overall I think this leads to a safer environment than might be found elsewhere.

dude… yes Rice is safe (Dorian) summed it up. But you are going to college - thats just how it is. And you are old enough to be reponsible.

I guess tell her that, especially the latter part

Haha, I’m Indian too. I think my parents are going with the assumption that i’m a good little child - which, of course, I am… Haha XD

okay, my parents had the EXACT same reaction so this is how I would advise you deal with them:

First of all, if you’re not a drinker/planning to drink in college, they should know that and this shouldn’t even be an issue. The presence of alcohol on campus is definitely felt but in no way dictates who has fun and who doesn’t. I know a bunch of kids in my college who don’t drink at all, and they still have fun amongst themselves on the weekends. So it’s totally up to you.

Second, this actually makes things safer. I have several friends at large state schools. The schools are completely dry, so students are forced to go off-campus to party. This increases the probability of drunk driving, assault, etc. As well, drinking in an unfamiliar situation (a friend of a friend of a friend’s creepy apartment) is just inherently unsafe.

At Rice, most drinking is either at pub (legal) or the residential colleges (technically illegal). Drinking in the residential colleges means there are a ton of upperclassmen, at least two sets of RAs, one set of Masters, and likely 2-3 certified EMTs within 30 seconds of you at all times, should the need arise.

As well, the residential college system at Rice fosters a sense of family and mutual respect that ensures most students watch out for each other and do not take advantage of each other. Drinking at Rice is not at all a “frat house” type of situation. Granted, there are some at Rice who will choose to drink and get dangerous/stupid, but the majority of drinkers at Rice drink in moderation and drink wisely, at least from what I’ve experienced. Because alcohol isn’t this forbidden fruit, most people don’t go overboard to the point of endangering others.

Finally, in order for you to be put in a situation around drunk/dangerous people, you’d actually have to to affirmatively choose to put yourself in that situation…it’s not like all of Rice is some huge wild party house. Those who want to drink and get crazy tend to congregate in the same parties/areas of space, so the more responsible drinkers just avoid that space and all is well.

The colleges tend to police themselves pretty well. Each college has an elected chief justice (and several associate justices) that you can call in case those crazy drunk people on your hall are being loud and obnoxious. There is always campus police, who are very responsive, but the students themselves serve as a very good first line of defense against the obnoxious ones.

Hi Suji!! LOL

Hi SUJ
I sent you a PM
