My Mom said I can't do Medicine if I don't get into a BSMD program

Well that is pretty self explanatory. Basically I'm Indian I wanted do something with astronomy but that was a no from parents(please don't say follow your dreams bc I gotten it from many people doesn't really help). I love bio and I have volunteered at hospitals and places so I found medicine quite interesting so that's what I really wanted to do and then this whole thing came up. What am I supposed to do? Are there ant low tier BSMD schools I can go to bc with my stats i'm not getting into much. 3.8 gpa not even, all ap classes and like 2000 sat. And i really dont want to be programmer or something. Im going inot 11th.

Biomedical engineering? Biochemistry?

Also she can’t really force you; you can get into college with whatever major, join the pre-med program, and sort things out later.

Compromise with her. Tell her you’ll apply to several BSMD programs if you can apply to several programs in something you want to do. Buy yourself some time for her to come around. She needs your cooperation, too, if you’re going to remain in a bsmd. You have another year to bring your GPA up. You can take the SAT again.

You can also show her your research on bsmds and what kind of h.s. GPA and SATs it takes to get into one of these. Then you can point out that there are few American bsmds that accept international students.

Finally, many students begin wanting to be physicians and end up with careers in something else. You can cross that bridge if you come to it.

oh I live in America the Indian thing was to show that my parents gave me three choices medicine programming and engineering. it might sound cliche. and stuff its that And thank you for the advice and the different choices ill do some more research about those

You aren’t competitive for BSMD right now.

^^^Don’t fear punctuation. For all your future readers, I thank you.

The cause of your mom’s insistence might be that med schools cost a ton of money AND she feels an obligation to pay for all your education because that’s what parents, in her mind, do. Reassure her that you’re not depending upon your family to pay for (all of?) med school, let alone undergrad–that you’re willing to take on debt to go to med school (and college?).

So if you don’t get into any BSMD programs, your parents won’t pay for college, and you need to go to work right out of highschool for whatever job you get? For some reason, I don’t think so. You’ll likely go to the best college that accepts you,and if you really want to give med school a try, you take the courses that you need–there is not really a “pre med” major at many schools, do well in them and the other subjects, take the MCATS and apply to med school. It’s not up to your parents after a point.

^ its not that they won’t pay it more like its their way or no way. even if they don’t I’m willing to do it my self. But my they said if i don’t get in I have to go into programming or engineering. I know it could be as simple as taking what I want in college but my parent … its kind of hard to explain… in my family they have to agree or it wont happen not matter what i do and im just freaking out bc they have turned down everything I have offered them like a compromise or something. Are there any premed where i can also do engineering bc i couldn’t find anything like that

One more question i know my gpas is low but if i keep that around the same, increase my sat and then do ALOT of EC would i be competetiveish

One doesn’t major in pre-med. One chooses a major and takes the med school requirements and then applies and hopes for the best. The major can be in dance. Or engineering. BSMDs are another matter.

Any reason why not CS or engineering? Astrophysics and astronomy is pretty math (and physics, and sometimes chemistry and geology) intensive, so if you’re OK with that, some engineering field should strike your interest as well. For instance, if you are interested in the geology aspects, there are geological engineering programs out there.

I notice you don’t say u ARE american. Are u an int’l student?

Tell your mother that if she insists on being this controlling, you’ll join the Army and get enough to go to school under the GI Bill or get an ROTC full-ride scholarship and do it your way. Two can play her game.

Full ride ROTC scholarships don’t cover room & board.

ROTC is full-ride? You can also join the NJ National Guard and go to any public college in NJ tuition-free (and what they pay you should be enough to cover room and board).

Risk of deployment, though.

Assuming you don’t want to go that route, however, why astronomy but not engineering? They’re all pretty heavy on math and science. Same with pre-med, BTW (at least the science).

you do NOT need your mom’s permission to be premed…or to go to med school.

Major in whatever they approve, but also quietly take the premed prereqs.

you do not need your parents AT ALL to apply or to pay for med school.

So, relax. If you dont get into a BS/MD, you can major in Chemical Engineering, which has virtually all the premed prereqs. Then after you graduate, apply to med school using funds from a job.

you can borrow all the med schools costs all by yourself, you don’t need your parents participation at all.

dont tell your parents that you can circumvent them…they’ll figure it out when it’s too late.

BME probably has all the pre-med reqs as well.

which state are you from. If you are a US citizen, your in state flag ship Univ with bsmd programs will be your best bet because astronomy is not offered every where, large state flagships are most likely offering.

@GMTplus7 We are legal long term residents and soon will be citizens and yes I consider myself an American because I grew up here.

@MrMom62 Funny thing you mentioned that because I have considered that and find it more appealing

@PurpleTitan‌ I dont prefer engineering because it just doesn’t interest my if I HAD to I would but again it would be in the astronomy department which isnt supported by my parents

My problem is my parents change their mind every two seconds and they make fun of me for my chocies and say you will never make its like this game of cat and mouse. So im trying to find a path that will get to med school and give me a way to break away to other fields if I HAD to do so. Are there any financial aid packages that cover bsmd?

State: CT
