My mom won't help me complete my CSS profile

I’m a first-generation student with a single mom who is not very supportive. She reluctantly gave me some information so that I could complete Fafsa but the school I am planning on going to requires an CSS profile. I need to know her assets but she will only give me one sum because she says it’s none of my business to know how much she has saved. I know I am probably eligible for scholarships as she doesn’t make that much a year and my efc is 0, so I don’t know how much it would affect me to just report the amount of savings that she is telling me.

She needs to fill it in then. Frankly I would think it is hers to do. I don’t give my kids that info either. Are you getting teh NCP to fill in his side?

If she will not cooperate with the financial aid form, the college will not give you financial aid.

Perhaps she does not want you to attend that college?

You won’t get aid without the detail. Can you explain to her that these schools are willing to give large amounts of FA (you could get as much as a quarter of a million dollars in aid) if they get this info? Or is there some other adult she would trust (a relative or your guidance counselor) who could talk to her?

Try to explain to her that you need to submit the form to get scholarship and grant money from the school. FAFSA is related to qualification for government loans.

I suggest that she create a log-on here and ask about the CSS profile. Other parents can explain to her about the money available from Profile schools in the form of scholarships and grants. With a EFC of $0, it can be a huge difference. You don’t want to leave money on the table.

She’d rather me not attend college at all, she’s very overbearing and I think she would rather have me home forever, so it’s really up to me.

Tough one: speak to your guidance counselor about whether you should just put in what you know. And maybe a little snooping (mail statements lying around?). And possible if any of your other relatives know what she has?

You needed assets to complete the fafsa as well. What did you put on that form? Or did you qualify for the simplified needs test and asset info wasn’t required?

Does this Profile school guarantee to meet full need for all accepted students?

If not…it might not be affordable anyway.

But without completing all of the required financial aid submissions…the school will NOT consider you for institutional need based aid. Period.

One of these days a kid is going to sue their parents over this…

@HRSMom

Sue them for what? Parents are under NO obligation to pay for college…at all. There is no mandate that parents MUST give financial info to,their parents.

No basis for a lawsuit…

Sorry…duplicate post. My post posted just fine…but a draft had also been saved…auto save…and while i was deleting it…which I could NOT seem to do…the post posted again.

No one is asking them to pay, just to provide info that would allow their kid to go to college/get ahead in life.

There is zero reason to do this. It really upsets me when i hear kids say their parents are doing this. If you can’t pay, at least give the kid a chance to get the money themselves!

We don’t know the whole story. For all we know…this kid is applying to a college that doesn’t meet full need, and is unaffordable anyway.

We are hearing one side of this from a student. There could be any number of other reasons why this parent won’t give the info to the student to complete the Profile.

The parent DID give the student info to complete the fafsa.

A failure to complete and submit Profile should not have any impact on an admissions decision.

@danielaruby

did you get accepted into the school? have you been accepted into any schools that you can afford?

I hope. I don’t want this student to “guess” and be wrong and get caught for verification on either Fafsa or css.

If it is RD, the student has to submit the info before they get a decision at most colleges.

No, Op will still get an admission decision. Op will just not remember eve a financial aid package other than federal aid based on the FAFSA

What kind of decision? On admission? No. On institutional need-based financial aid? Yes.

Chapel Hill meets full need, I’ve already been accepted, and fafsa didn’t require that I provide asset information. At the core, my mom is unwilling to give me the information because she doesn’t want me to go. I’ve been aware she doesn’t want me to go to college all my life, which is why I have given my all in school to be eligible for the most amount of scholarships possible. I’m number one in my class, class president, and I’ve taken dual enrollment courses so my chances of getting other scholarships I’ve already applied for is pretty good, but I want to be able to qualify for UNC’s full aid and I’m afraid I won’t be able to without this information.
