Oh and I want to major in Finance, ive been wanting this since my Sophomore year so i am very set on this. I really want to work in a firm, I loved working at KPMG and I wouldnt mind working in the business field.
As of Senior year, i have maintaind a 87% average (sorry for rambling)
There’s nothing wrong with a gap year. My son took one. Have you sent an application in to your local community college?
Finance, and I think I may consider community college at this point - it seems to be my best option at this point. Although this isnt want I planned, I think I will be okay with this. MY cumulative GPA is a 87%, and Finance.
The only thing that worries me about a gap year, is that I wont be able to work during that gap year (and save money), because im having a spinal fusion next month for my Scoliosis D: (I know, my life is a mess!) so I know i wont physically be able to have a job or work for a while. This is so overwhelming
Were you eligible for SEEK/CD/EOP or HEOP? IF yes, did you apply for these programs.
How much are your parents willing to pay? You could get into Potsdam, which is SAT optional but it seems like paying for Potsdam is going to be a problem
While you may not want to hear this or even be thinking along these lines. I would recommend that you consider the following:
Attend CUNY CC for 2 years (as it is going to be a stretch for you to get into Baruch with an 890. What do your regents grades look like). If you go the CC route, I am going to recommend LaGuardia as they run on a trimester system and you have to do an internship as part of the degree requirements.
Are you eligible for Pell or TAP?
If yes, I would recommend that you run, to sign up for CUNY ASAP. If you get accepted through ASAP, then your could be debt free, your first 2 years as ASAP covers tuition, fees, books, metro cards. You can do your two years and then transfer to Baruch to finish your degree in accounting .
If you are not Pell eligible, then it will be affordable for you to attend school. Go for a year get 24 credits and a 3.2 gpa and then transfer to Baruch.
Keep in mind that there are many routes that will take you from point A to point B.
Yes I am eligible for SEEK and the other two, when I applied to Baruch, i made sure to apply under SEEK. I believe I applied to EOP for one or two of my other colleges (it’s been a while, but im positive i did) - but still didnt get it
Baruch is the only college i didnt get a response for since I recently did the application (right before the deadline) but i dont have high hopes, im going to stay humble and think worse case scenario.
I am also eligible for Pell, but im not sure about Tap (but i ber i am, my household size and my mothers income level is very well the standard for these).
I will definitely consider CC and transfer credits in 1 or 2 years, I just hope its not too late to apply. I will talk to my guidance counselor about it. Im going to ignore what the kids in my school may say or think if they find out (because they will ask where I will be going) and i’ll do whats best for me financially and acedemically
Thank you everyone for your help and advice . I appreciate it and i am happy that I was able to get information and a guide/solution for my problem from you all!
The other kids aren’t paying your college bill, so don’t worry about what they think. Sybbie719 is very familiar with NYS colleges and made some excellent points. I would pay close attention to post #24 and go see your guidance counselor tomorrow to follow up on it. Good luck!
I agree with the above posters that suggested taking a gap year. Most admissions counselors would sympathize with you (after all, you have garnered the sympathy of everyone in this thread,) and would be especially sympathetic for someone who spent a year earning money for their education (and if you got your SAT up to 1700 or so, that certainly wouldnt hurt either.) I understand that you are going through a lot physically right now, but surely there is a way for you to earn money without anymore physical stress then you would undergo as a student next year. Good luck, and pm me if you need any help with the testing side of things. I improved my score from 2090 to 2330 and I would happy to help you out.
I really think the gap year is the best idea because of your physical need to recover and your emotional need to be ready for school. A CC would work well because you could go part time and HEAL.
Wow! That’s an impressive score and improvement !Thank you so much :)!
OOPS! you can’t go to school if you plan on doing a GAP year. MY MISTAKE!
Thank you, and I will follow up with my guidance about it ASAP :)!
Please come back with updates and further questions. There are a lot of folks here with a combined great wealth of knowledge. They are willing to share factual information and help guide you to your best possible options.
If you do take a gap year, I assume you could work by fall (since you seem to be planning on attending college in the fall). Also, you don’t have to take a class to raise your SAT, you can purchase books and study on your own. A class probably would help, and you may need to find someone to help you with the questions in the book you don’t understand if you go the route of studying on your own, but you CAN raise your SAT scores. But I also think community college is a valid option for you. And if you aren’t ready to go in the fall because of your surgery, you could probably start mid-year as well. Good luck!
Thank you both and I will definitely update with any news and with the option I end up choosing. I dont know exactly how I will recover after the surgery, but I was told that it can take anywhere from 6 months to a year to fully recover and be able to work/do what a normal person can physically do.
Maybe that gap will be well needed for me, and I can take advantage of that by studying for the SAT and/or attend CC and slow down (physically) and heal. I feel much better about choosing the CC route, I guess i didnt really have the chance to talk about it with anyone so I was kind of scared of the idea before. I’ll start doing research on local CC’s and their applications and deadlines right away.
In the meantime,I’ll send an email or visit Baruch in person and see ask about my application (polietly, of course) and ask if anything else is needed - hopefully this may somehow increase my chances and move the process quicker. If not I dont get accepted, I wont be too upset and i’ll definitely continue on with CC and transfer!
If you attend CC, you probably want to stick with it for 2 years and then transfer. You lose out on merit aid and sometimes on need-based aid if you transfer, so you will want to probably stick with the less expensive CC route for a bit if you start there. Many colleges will consider you a transfer student if you take any CC classes once you graduate from high school, so don’t do it just to fill the time or dabble in starting college.
You seem like a really likeable kid and that goes a long way!
I think everyone who has replied is rooting for you and wants you to succeed. Sybbie172 has given you excellent advice.
Also, keep in mind that there is no one right way to reach your goals. It’s rarely a straight line from A to B.
One last bit of advice. Keep doing what you have done here; that is asking for advice and reacting maturely even when the answer isn’t what you wanted to hear. The ability to listen to others and change direction when necessary is vital to success. Seriously, being able to accurately access your situation and respond appropriately is so so important in the adult world. Keep doing that and you are going to be fine.
I wish you the best and keep us posted.
Ohh okay, you’re right - I might as well stick to it for 2 years if I start off that way :)!
Wow thank you so much for that :)!!! I try my best to be positive, and i really do respect everyones advices and it is helping me greatly.
My mother just came home now and I apologized to her and told her that I now understand where she was coming from (in regards to the loans and me being ignorant on them) and we have both agreed that I will visit Baruch tomorrow to ask about my application - and we have both also agreed that CC for 2 years and transfering is another great option for me. Im happy that she and I have settled that pretty well haha. She told me that many people choose that route for financial reasons all the time (as you guys have said) and that it’s a great option to do in my case. Shes totally for it and accepting of that idea !
I think I was a little to worried that she’ll oppose it or be upset for some reason. Im so relieved!
Thank you again !!
