my nephews chances

He's a junior in high school, with an unweighted 3.7 . Notable classes are a b in ap calculus, an a in ap organic chemistry, and an a in stats. No extra curriculars except captain of the debate team. His father got his doctorate from Oklahoma in political science, did a fellowship at Harvard and can get recommendations from two to lawyers at Harvard and Yale. He plans to get all a's the rest of high school. His father says he can't get a full ride, because his gpa is too low, I think differently. He needs a scholarship and has no help from parents. Onions please.

The most important thing in getting merit scholarships is the SAT1 or ACT test score. Yes, the grades are important too, along with class rank, type of courses taken, and they certainly have to be above a certain threshhold, but the test scores are what generally drives the awards. So without that information, it is difficult to come up with any “chances”. I recommend you look up an old thread in the archives here by Momfromtexas about full ride scholarships, as she came up with a method to search for them.

That his father has all of these accolades and connections is not likely to mean much at all. The schools are going to be looking at HIM, the student, not the father uness the father is some big time celebrity.

Unless your nephew goes strictly for merit awards, his parents financials will be required whether they are willing to help or not. If the parents won’t invest in the kid, those colleges that give need based aid only will not.

Hi!

im not sure what u r asking…

if ur asking the chances of getting accepted, then u havent provided enough info to predict that…
chances of getting full ride is someting totally different…
if he were to get accepted, then harvard WILL meet full need…so basically if his family cant afford harvard then he will get the full ride, it wont be dependent in his gpa…the money that is…
ALTHOUGH, his gpa is very much important when it comes to getting acceoted in the uni itself…
so basically he should worry about getting in…coz once hes in he will get all the money he needs to go :)

hope that helps…
good luck!
