My (ongoing) College Admissions Story

This thread is epic.

Lol, so true! ^

WAIT UP ONE MINUTE…

The LBad Cup committee has decided to strip Syracuse Orange and the Binghamton Bearcats of their third and fourth place finishes as a result of a pending investigation into a few players using cocaine and doping before matches. The shocking discovery means that their respective quarterfinal victories over Rider and Bentley have been voided, as has the third-placed game. Instead, the bronze medal will be given to the Stetson Hatters, and fourth place will be awarded to the Hofstra Pride.

Just felt it would have made more sense to give third and fourth place to schools that accepted me, haha! :stuck_out_tongue:

“Almost” doesn’t count in college admissions or the LBad Cup…speaking on behalf of my alma mater (Syracuse), we knew if admissions wasn’t smart enough to accept @LBad96 then we may as well go out with a blaze of glory. We were honored to participate in the LBad Cup and regret the behaviour of some of our mates. Only the GOLD matters in the LBad Cup and we hope UNCW can handle all the LBad Man has to offer!

 awesome thread and I really hope it stays pinned with regular updates

@brucemag the LBad Cup committee appreciates your comments. This certainly isn’t what 'Cuse fans wanted to hear considering the fact that their basketball team will miss the NCAA Tournament for the next few years. Their sports just can’t seem to stay out of the news.

@MYOS1634 you best believe that I’ll update this regularly!!

Seeing as I’m now set for next year, I just wanted to post a little commentary on the process.

Acceptances
Rider University: the second school that I applied to, and first one to open its doors to me. I came into the application season with this as a safety school, but was still ecstatic when I learned that I got in. I got a $16k per year scholarship at the time of the acceptance, and later got other nice grants that would have lowered the cost to only $3k a year. However, I wasn’t excited about the school; it’s a lesser-known private school in my home state of NJ that I was absolutely itching to get out of. Nothing about the school really wowed me.

Stetson University: this school’s application to acceptance situation was the opposite of Rider’s, and I was very happy to get into this one. I always considered it a good school since discovering it late in my junior year, and was attracted to its Florida location. They also gave me a $23k/year scholarship (the most that any school would give me) in addition to some great FA that lowered costs to only $15k/year. But I did take a deeper look into the school, and found out that I was turned off by the small size and the sleepy town surrounding it.

Quinnipiac University: QU was my first choice for the majority of my junior year, and I loved how beautiful the campus looked in pictures and all. I was ecstatic to get in here, as it was always one of my top choices, and it broke a losing streak for me (I’ll get to that later). But as soon as I heard that there tended to be a decent amount of stuck-up snobs on campus, I was immediately turned off. As much as I liked the school, I didn’t want to go through high school all over again. However, I did like (mostly) everyone I met through the Facebook groups and other group chats. Though I must say that quite a few of us (including myself) ended up going elsewhere lol.

University of North Carolina Wilmington: ah, UNCW. I had only heard of this school when I had asked a colleague where he was going last year. The next time I had heard anything about it was when @MYOS1634 had recommended it to me last summer. I was compelled to look it up, and found out that it was a very good, growing school near the beach. I was initially nervous about the racial makeup, but it turned out to be an absolute non-factor as I was very eager to apply. I had always believed that it was one of the top three or four schools I’d end up choosing, and it truly was the best possible fit for me all along.

Hofstra University: this was a school that I had liked since junior year. I liked its proximity to NYC and its decent business school, but was repelled by the nasty surrounding area. I liked my interview (and the interviewer :p), but considering the fact that I had already gotten offers from better schools, I was never going to go here. I also felt that the FA given was subpar given the academic quality of the school (only the $12.5 k/year scholarship, nothing else).

University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown: a branch campus of the actual school, which rejected me. This was the first school that I had declined, and I had mentally erased it as a choice virtually as soon as it came in.

Rejections
Clark University: this was the first school to give me a rejection letter. I was very interested in this school at one point towards the end of my junior year, but that quickly waned. I had only decided to apply here in October, and I have a feeling that the admissions office caught my lack of interest. I wouldn’t have chosen it regardless. I didn’t like how small the school was, nor was I a big fan of Worcester.

Fordham University: I had always held this school in a very high regard, and it was going to be a reach no matter what. I had flip-flopped with this school on my list for a while, then remembered that they gave me a free app and decided to apply lol. I don’t think I would have done very well there tbh, as their core is very extensive. I also wouldn’t have enjoyed the food. :stuck_out_tongue:

Northeastern University: I had decided to apply here after my SAT sitting, and I was attracted to the prestige and Boston. Saying that, it was always going to be a reach. Although I was not surprised at the decision itself, the fact that it was my third consecutive denial did sting a bit.

University of Massachusetts Amherst: oh, UMass. My first choice school from last April to this past January. I applied on August 1st. I attended the admissions rep visit and told that rep how much I wanted to go there - multiple times. I was so obsessed with the school that in the midst of those three straight rejections, I was literally sick to my stomach with nerves. But they had taken too darn long, and they didn’t seem to care that I would have loved to attend. They didn’t care about my writing score on the SAT. As a result, no tears were shed when I finally did get rejected in late January. Besides the fact that I had already gotten into UNCW, I didn’t like hearing about the campus informant controversy, and I was also very discontent with how they cut ties with Bill Cosby.

University of Pittsburgh (main campus): This was another school that I had flip-flopped with, and I eventually decided to apply after they had finally given me a free app and parental encouragement. I had a feeling that the best I’d get was a branch campus admit, however, and that’s exactly what happened. I’m thinking it would have been difficult for me to get my feet set on the main campus, hence the decision to accept me at Johnstown.

Bentley University: another school I had really liked since junior year. I liked its business focus and it’s proximity to Boston, as well as its great reputation for career services. However, this was the rejection that shut me out of the state of Massachusetts for at least the next four years. And seeing the brutal winter that state had this year, they probably did me a favor anyways.

Syracuse University: I mostly knew this school for basketball at first, but research led me to find out that it was actually a great school academically as well. Therefore, always a reach. If I wasn’t too glad about the winter that MA had, then I probably would have HATED it at Syracuse. The scandal involving their basketball team was also a real damper, and the surrounding area didn’t seem too friendly either.

Binghamton University: always liked Bing academically, but wasn’t very thrilled about the abhorrence of the basketball team or the city of Binghamton. I was surprised that they deferred me, but not about the final result. Probably wouldn’t have really enjoyed it there, either.

Final thoughts: I had come into this application season with reasonable optimism, but had no idea just WHAT my options would be come May 1st. If you told me in August that I would gain admittance to six schools in six states, I would have been surprised. While I was a tiny bit disappointed that the MA schools shut the door on me, I realized that I needed something different from the bitter winters and uptight manners of the Northeast. I originally intended to stay up here, but I needed a fresh start and some new scenery. UNCW provides all of that and more. I’m the only kid from my school attending, it’s in a state that I’ve never visited, and it’s also a great chance to expand my worldview. The campus atmosphere seems great, and the people are very laid-back and friendly. Plus, the city of Wilmington looks AMAZING and I love the beach. It’s a great school academically as well, and is only getting better every day. I’m excited to see what the new chancellor has in store as well. In the end, I feel that all schools involved made the right call. Although I eventually had to commit without visiting any school, I KNOW that I’m going to love it at UNC Wonderful. I couldn’t have been happier or prouder with or prouder of my decision.

GO SEAHAWKS!!!

I’m very excited for you, LBad, and hope you love it there next year! Looking forward to reports on your experience…

Wow you have entertained a lot of people over a sustained period of time. Bet we see you on mass media of some type (hopefully not Most Wanted or American Greed). Good luck

Might want to change your login to MeGood

@LBad96 (aka MeGood) might want to see if he can get AP credit for English comp or Creative Writing for this thread! Good luck LBad. Hey, how about you celebrate post #300 in the coming weeks by revealing your first name…we all have gotten to know you, yet we don’t know your name!

@1203southview @lostaccount thank you both!! It means a lot!1 And, “MeGood”? Hmm, why not? lol

@brucemag Considering the fact that some of you have demonstrated interest in visiting me, I’m not opposed to that idea.

EDIT: Whoops, didn’t mean to put “prouder” twice in that analysis. Goodness me, what a typo. :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey this is College Confidential! May I suggest the pm system for identify exchanges-just a suggestion. You never know when things will come back to bite you. Good luck to you! Take it on!

@lostaccount Thinking about it, PM actually sounds like a MUCH better idea. Those of you who are interested can PM me for my name so you could actually visit me, haha!

Yes, keeping names private is essential, and giving one’s identity IRL is against the TOS I believe.

@MYOS1634 From the TOS:

“When using CollegeConfidential.com, please be certain that anything you disclose does not compromise your personal safety. Do not provide your name, phone number, social security number or any other personally identifying information to people you do not know. Do not continue any conversation online that makes you feel uncomfortable. Please report any incidents of harassment or attempts to discover personal information to the moderators.”

Does this mean even giving it out via PM would be a problem?

might as well keep my name private, then.

Now to register for orientation!

I think you can share your name in a PM, but I wouldn’t advise it.
When’s orientation?
Have you thought about the classes you’ll take?

@MYOS1634 I’m thinking of the June 10-11 orientation, but I missed the early registration deadline, so I can’t sign up for classes early.

In the way of classes, I’ve been thinking of ENG 100, HST 102, MAT 111, ECON 125, Wellness, and FYS.

Lbad, you really can’t fault UMASS for cutting ties with Bill Cosby. The PR mess would have been worse if they didn’t especially in light of the climate on school campuses today.
