My (ongoing) College Admissions Story

@bucky0926 I still think that they should have given the money that he donated back to him. UMass wasn’t going to look good either way on this one. Cosby won’t even be tried or convicted in a court outside of the unreasonably vicious public. In my mind, UMass is at fault.

^Agreed.

@cakeisgreat @SandyScrubs Just wanting to hear from you two, seeing as you are CC representatives of the finalists…any words on the final choice?

So, you’re taking the Freshman Composition class + History of Western Civ II (which should be decently similar to AP Euro, so that it’s not TOOO hard) + Math (wait till you have your placement test results - and DO study beforehand*; Math 111 is like Precalculus on steroids) + Econ 125 (but I thought it wouldn’t count for business? Or is it to have a “preview” of the serious Economics major’s foundation course?) + FYS (do everything they ask, get an A - you’ll see that in college, doing everything may not suffice, so make sure to get that A!) + Wellness = great schedule, very balanced and very doable to “ease you” into college. Well done!!!

  • you'll also need Math 151, don't know if you can place into it and if you WANT to place into it right away!

@MYOS1634 Why, thank you!! A few questions:

  1. Would Introductory German 1 be better off in the first or second semester? (Or would I have to take both 101 and 102 in the same year?)
  2. How do you study for a placement test?

You could take German1as an extra class first semester, and if its too hard you could use used ti as your drop class.

@LBad96 I think your final choice is wonderful and I plan to look at your school for my son later. So keep us posted on how you like the school!!

@cakeisgreat thanks!! You can count on updates

@Lbad96 I’m happy to hear that you choose wilmington! Always nice to hear about another Seahawk, when’s your orientation?
Little tip about your schedule, look into taking ENG 103. It’s based off your SAT reading score, and I think yours is high enough. It’s not harder than 100 really, and you don’t have to take ENG 200 later, so it saves you from taking another class! I am terrible at English, but I really enjoyed the class, and loved saving the time and money from another class.

@SandyScrubs my orientation session is June 10-11 (the second Wednesday and Thursday of June). And it does turn out that I am qualified for ENG 103, thankfully, so I will be taking that instead of ENG 100 or 101. I’m also very happy and proud to say that I’m going to UNCW, and I’m pleased that I will be in North Carolina instead of Connecticut!

Would you advise me to take German for the first time?

Actually, I happened to talk to a classmate about her German class this past semester. I don’t know anything about the program other than what I’ve heard from her. She said that the professor was very difficult in that she expected the students to put in effort, and she was struggling with her grade, but that she learned a LOT for a 100 level class. That being said, she also had on her course load 2 nursing classes and anatomy 2, so she had a full plate already before that :stuck_out_tongue: But she still really enjoyed the class, and said it was worth a hit to her GPA (She has to keep a 3.5)
I’d definitely consider it. Since you’re taking UNI and PED those two require very little effort in comparison to normal classes, you should be fine taking one harder class (though I heard you have more onlien work than I did with PED, good luck with that :P). Plus, might as well knock it out of the way
What made you not want to continue with Spanish? That might be good for a business degree, since Spanish is more common. And why German specifically, if I may ask?

German is going to be harder than either Italian or French (both easier than Spanish*). French has usefulness for Canada (plus other French speaking countries like Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast, Burundi, Morocco, Tunisia, etc.) and I don’t think you need to hear why Spanish is useful. If you’re thinkinf of German because it’s good for dyslexic (don’t know if you are, just putting it out there), Italian is just as recommended and doesn’t have cases on top of conjugation. A language that’s likely to grow tremendously and fast is Portuguese (look at how fast the Brazilian economy’s growing and the country’s changing), plus it’d be relatively easy for someone who knows some Spanish, less common thus more likely to make you “stand out”, and good for business.

  • I know Spanish has the reputation of being easier, but it's because spelling and pronunciation are easier... two of the easiest parts of the language. Grammar and conjugation, especially conjugation, are very hard in Spanish. It's not easy in other languages but Spanish has more tenses.

@SandyScrubs ah, I see. I have interest in German because I just watched the Book Thief in AP Euro :stuck_out_tongue: but seriously, it sounds pretty neat to learn.

@MYOS1634 come to think of it, I’ve never taken Italian or French before. I’d LOVE to take Portuguese, but UNCW unfortunately does not offer it. My younger siblings have both taken French and absolutely LOVE it, so why don’t I try it out myself?

My suggestion is that you take Foreign Language 1 first semester, but if you see you’re too overwhelmed, you drop or whichever class is too hard; by taking that class, you give yourself some leeway since you have enough credit to drop a class without penalty of any sort.
It may be a good idea to prepare and study a bit: Foreign languages in college go very fast, you cover about 1 year of HS language in 4 months in college, or 3-4h in class = 3 weeks in high school…
Portuguese and French are roughly the same level of difficulty. Italian is easier. Spanish is harder. German is harder than Spanish. Russian is harder than German.

@MYOS1634 Never mind, UNCW DOES offer Portuguese…I’ll take that first semester

So then, ENG 103, (hopefully) MAT 115, HST 101, PED 101, UNI 101, and PRT 101…about 15 credits. Good schedule?

Excellent!!

BIG UPDATE #20: Wow. I’m returning to the old format for the first time in eleven pages. Finally, a proper update once again.

The June 10-11 orientation is on…but I unfortunately will have to miss it. I came down with a cold last night, and therefore could not make the trip down to attend orientation this morning. I instead will get a tour on July 17th before attending orientation on August 16th and 17th. It sucks that I’ll get last pick for classes, but I have been told that some classes are held over for those who attend orientation in August. Also, apparently most OOSers also attend the August orientation, especially my fellow Northerners (school doesn’t end for another two weeks in most areas).

On the other hand, I recently received my housing assignment. I am not near LBad Cup hero Graham H., as he is in Hewlett Hall. However, I’m very excited to say that I will be living in Cornerstone Hall next year!!! I got the nicest dorm on campus, and will be near a few people I already know. I also took a virtual tour on the UNCW app, and good lord, it is GORGEOUS. Truly excited!!

It’s all coming into place for you @LBad96! Just stay healthy and fight off those colds!

@brucemag of course!! :slight_smile:

Hey, man. I think you’ve seen me around CC a bit, but I’ve been following you around for a while – even before this thread began. I have a few words to write, but I’d like to begin with the truth that you’re a real inspiration and a legend. I’m lucky enough not to face the unfortunate problems you’ve faced, but it’s crazy to think that kids at my school are obsessed with college admissions and killing their consciousness to be perfect while a chill, awesome guy like you, despite some setbacks, is loving life and doing amazing. With a disposition and passion like yours, I’m 100% you’ll be a great student in college. Best of luck, bro. Just wanted to put my words out.
